I called the PO today to get history. He said someone had traded it in on an International Scout or Travelall at their dealer in 72. When they got it it was Ruby Red. It did have a camper kit installed. I removed kit as it was a homemade? It was painted a god awful orange/brown leaving the interior original paint.
It was left up at a lake cabin to haul ski boat to boat launch for years. I remember as a kid backing this bus in the lake to get boat out of water.
So as it goes right now I am third owner. I have had it since 94 in my garage. Second owner got it 72 and sold to me in 94. Will hopefully get pics when it was Original paint.
I need to find out what M-374 is. My bus is farily unmolested so with help the Samba community we might figure the missing M codes. Had Durvit popout glass. Rest of glass is sekurit. It has all white handles/ knobs/estucheons. I thought a Kombi would have black accessories.
Why it was ordered with no middle seat? It has mounting points for a full middle seat.
As of now the only metal to replace is battery tray. By far the most solid bus I have ever seen. Not even surface rust. |

From the Samba technical section
Quote: |
374 North American equipment
Includes 6 popouts May be Kombi/Standard only
Gear shift and hand brake lever, steering column tube, and seat frame L41 black;
Escutcheon (inner door handle), inner door handles, shifter knob, emergency brake button, heater knob, headlight knob,
choke knob, turn signal knob, windshield wiper switch, and rear hinge panel covers (211-238) 036 silver beige;
Door trim panels from Ch. No. 1 222 026 013 pearl grey; Flashing indicator black 005 |
Why no middle seat? It was a tourist delivery therefor they probably traveled with it and used it as a camper, or bought some big items and shipped them back with the bus. _________________ Air and Water are needed to survive,

Here is the m-code plate for my ruby red kombi:
It has been painted hardware store tarp blue. I've had good luck using graffiti remover to reveal the OG ruby red. |

Now I really want to get my 63 single cab back into it's original ruby red. Original paint won't be an option, but I hooe for a good color match. Thanks for the inspiration! |

i believe my 62 kombi to be ruby red, though only has RED stamped on the M plate and no colour code, though the engine bay, has lovely Og paint. I was unsure wether to paint it back this colour, but after seeing some pictures it makes me want to do it!! |

I started stripping the paint layers off, and this is what i got
I just hope it is Ruby Red! Here are a few shots of the engine bay, it just needs a good clean though!
The M-Codes on the van are:
175 - Overriders
504 - Board Bulkhead Panelling
007 - Unknown
008 - Unknown
106 - Heavy Duty shock absorbers
108 - Camping equipment
113 - Safari Windows
155 - Cyclone Air filter
231 - Kombi
RED - as colour |

I started striping the rattle-can primer to find "hippy" paint on the ruby red. Lots of polka dots, flowers, etc. I'm going to have to see the bus with all the primer removed to see if I want to keep the hippy graphics. The hippy graphics were scuffed up before the primer was applied, so there far from perfect. I got a little to agressive on one area during the removal process and the hippy graphics can be removed. |

My dad bought this '63 Ruby Red brand new and let me drive it home from the dealership when I was 18. He gave it to me in 1967 and I've had it ever since.

That is actually a standard micro bus that has been repainted on the outside, RR never came on standard micros. The repaint is close looking but probably not ruby red. _________________ Samba Member #95 |
