Now if I posted the difference, the maker might alter his repro, wouldn't he? |
I'm curious as to what the differences are as well. I've spoken to Nelson a number of times and he said he even had the correct number of spot welds and the spacing duplicated. Now that's attention to detail. _________________ My Beetles :

Without physically looking a the actual repo decklid and not the picture it is very hard to say, with any certainty, what is different.
IMHO I think it's the way the rain tubes are positioned as they leave the rain catchers. On og decklids they flow out in an immediate arc, where in the repo, they seem to come straight out and THEN they arc downward. I'm sure the repo pic is a prototype and it can very easily be fixed by re-bending the draintubes.
Like I said it's hard to say with that picture, but, I'm still going to buy one regardless and am thankfull they are being made.

Those decklids looked pretty full-on to me. I'd run one. Especially if I didn't have one........ _________________ CH³NO²

I have to agree................On anything but a stock restoration, I'd consider one of those bad boys. I saw one this weekend, and it was beautiful. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

Interesting that the sedan pricing really is about what a decent original one goes for. A bit of an apples to oranges comparison, but I have never found sedan Ws to be that hard to find, their prices pretty stable at about $250-$450.
'Verts are another story.
I saw the lids this past weekend also and they are indeed very nice. Talked to Nelson quite a bit, he has a long history of making parts, some of which may be in your cars already and you never knew he made them.... _________________ John Henry

John, that's still twice the price that magazine dork paid for that one @ Litchfield..
Say hello to Chuck, Dan, Glenn, and the rest of the crew for me next weekend... _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

These were made primarily to create vert decklids and go after market, but they naturally start out as sedan decklids, which you get as a default and will sell anyways if/when someone wants a clean lid to go straight to prime/paint with. Basically you'll save upwards of $200+ if not more just for not having to straighten/prep an og one. So in most cases if not all you'll save time/money with either KSR lid.
No doubt given the time they took they are dead-on, and once painted no one will ever know period, which will eventually/now knock prices down for either version og lid. Without basically any differentiation on a stock part theres no real convincing way a much larger premium will be paid for an og lid, like it or not.
How folks feel about that I'm not sure, but we're all guilty at one point or another for buying Asian made items (knowing it or not) from the big catalog guys in the past. In alot of cases with necessary spare parts we don't have a choice in able to get our cars back on the road. But in this case though sort of makes me feel bad for the craftsmen out there like Wolf that was making these vert lids out of original sedan lids, and was recently working on the rain catchers as well, doubt we'll see his version at this point, but surely would of appreciated his version alot more even if it were more expensive. As my grandmother used to say, "like it or not thats progress I guess". |

One advandage of the KSR lids is that you will get the 50 year corrosion warranty that no one else is offering. No doubt that so some only the original will do, but for the rest of us that have a wife and kids to support, this is the answer. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

There will always be a way to tell the repros from the originals, with a trained eye. _________________ John Henry

Wow. 50 years. What is EDP and how can you coat an entire car with it? _________________ CH³NO²
