the Beehive filter coolers have been reproduced, a bit pricey though here :

You think they could have polished the ribs.
I wonder what a real one would go for?
Anyone know which canister it takes? _________________ '74 914, back on jackstands for a 3.0/6

How do the "Beehive" coolers compare to the Frams?

the Beehive Filcoolator is much "cooler" with the fins, not as much cooling going on with a Fram _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction. The Fram doesn't make claims to be a cooler, it's simply a filter. Having said that you put more oil through the engine it will have a cooling effect.
My only reservation about the Beehive Cooler and the cooling spirals is that they will lower oil temperature but the heat extracted from both is channelled back through the fanhousing leading to higher head temperatures.
A sump extension will cool the oil without recirculating the extracted head back into the engine. _________________ John.

around $200....I've seen them anywhere from $199-$280 so search around. A few of the online hot rod stores have them. _________________ Regards, Sean |

Funny, as i was just talking with Steph about this http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=946078. I have an original beehive, but don't know where to mount the darn thing.......I want it where the fram goes, but it's much bigger and it might hit my rain gaurds on my vert lid. Steph said he can make the lines for it because he has one also......he just needed to know where it would be mounted. I ordered the fram lines instead.
Can anyone recommend a good spot to mount a beehive filter/cooler? |

The mounting bracket thats sold ( seperatly) with this Beehive looks shallow as far as mounting go's! Looks like in the Original Okrasa Picture the Beehive mounting bracket extended the cooler farther away from the fan shroud to allow the dual carb set up to function Properly.
Does anybody know what size the inlet and outlet fittings are for this cooler? |

Fitting threads: 1/8 NPT.... normal it is US made
This is the correct thread for the original one but there is not reason to make an other one even on a repro |

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but the picture says this cooler adds 1.5 quarts to the oil capacity. I am about to use one of these on a 36hp rebuild and was wondering how to go about adding the extra oil? Do I just put in 2.5+1.5 quarts into the filler or should i open the beehive and add oil that way. Or do I add the standard 2.5 quarts and slowly add the extra amount as per the dipstick?
I'm guessing I soak the beehive filter first and see how much it soaks up - but 1.5 quarts seems excessive...any one have experience with one of these? |

I have a Fram on my Okrasa and during an oil and filter change I suck all the oil from the filter housing replace the filter and slowly add the additional oil to pre soak the filter. Then replace cover and continue with the standard oil change. Once done filling to mark on the dip stick run engine and recheck level. Should be the same for the beehive. _________________ www.blastserv.com

Anyone ever started running one of these?
I’m a little confused as it says inlet at the bottom. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

I run one of these. If I recall correctly there is small pipe that runs up the middle. Oil enters the side, fills the chamber, and moves forward through the filter media to the middle where it exits a small hole at the top of the pipe down to the return.
I get a lot of water in the cooler. Not sure if it "Sweats" a bit. I don't run the car very often so it could be that as well...I really enjoy that it is there. |
