A few of these South African built, Jurgens Autovilla, coachbuilt motorcaravans, turn up in Great Britain, of which I have seen some photographs in our British VW magazines.
The secretary of the British, Volkswagen Caravanning & Camping Club, who several years ago, lived just a few miles from me, had one of these vehicles, which is featured in an old issue of VW Motoring magazine. There is also one featured, in a past issue of Volkswagen Camper & Commercial magazine.
Even rarer than the Jurgens Autovilla, is the British, GT Motorised Orlando coachbuilt motorcaravan, built by GP in Kingston-upon-Hull.
This is 1975 conversion, on a 1972 VW 16/1700 Type 2 panel van, with 1976~79 VW 2000 Type 2 engine, which is reckoned to probably be, the only surviving example.

The extent to which high-sided vehicles are affected by cross winds, not only depends upon the projected area, but also the squareness or roundness of the roof edges, which alters the drag lateral coefficient.

Hello Adriaan.
When did the 2nd generation, luton-bodied vehicles, supercede the 1st generation?
I saw one 2nd generation, VW Type 2 Jurgens Autovilla, when my parents and I were touring Transvaal, Natal, Orange Free State & Swaziland, in a hired Datsun E20 campervan, during April 1980. It was the only VW Type 2 campervan I saw, suring the whole of our touring holiday.
The 1st generation Jurgens Autovilla, were also manufactured under licence by Karmann in Germany and renamed the Karmann Gypsy. They were also similarly manufactured in Brazil, but whether by Karmann, I do not know.
There are also some examples of the Karmann Gypsy, in Great Britain.

I'm not too sure about the change in design, but note that even the first generation Autovilla is a later-generation Type 2 Bay (indicators above the lenses. Well i love Autovillas- after 2 previous Campers, these are like the Rolls Royce of campers to my mind.! I live
up Nr Kingston upon Hull in the uk, & have not seen another other than in photos in the uk, but i know there are
at least 4 or 5 around. I still have the original 'Jugans' crockery too, with cups & saucers, t-pot, coffee pot,
plates & bowls.! i tried to resist the temptation to re-spray , but got fed up of it looking so dull & unimpressive
in its original dull pea soup green... so i freshend it up a bit - i love it.. & it turns heads everywhere..

Funny you should mention that, as they are not vented. I never actually thought about it. Those hubcaps are the same as that were fitted to various Datsun models in SA in the 70s, but they have a 'J' (for Jurgens) stamped on.

recently found in the western Australian desert 350 miles south of Perth [/img]
hoping it's being saved, I have a v.w nut mate in Perth who's trying to buy it..
still have mine by the way & my kids are enjoying it too these days..
