Well ended up making friends with a resto guy and did some trading. He put me in the school of hard knocks and I learned ALOT learned to love metal work and all that is involved with it. It took me awhile to get the hang of it. Well the guy was having problems and I never got to work on it. So moved it to the house and took off working as fast as I could. Finally after a realy long week and weekend its in paint.
If you wanna see the build in more detail its on the sbs site (alot of pictures) I still lack alot of small odds and ends but starting the wiring tonight then fix the mainshaft bearing in the transaxle. _________________ Jonathan

Dayum Johnathon, looks great! Shame you can't drive it down this weekend for your Bachelor Party!
We could load up the strippers in the back!
Amazing how you found time to fix up the bus while at the same time buy a house and get ready to get married! _________________ 1970 Lotus White Panel

Figured I would fill in this thread with all of the details of the build since Im at work and bored lol.
Ok so we got it moved to his shop and started to work. I decided to lower the bus so started by raising the steering box. sorry no pictures on that one. Just measured the angle and cut the support moved it up and welded it back with braces. It was easy with the floor out.
This is the first thing I ever made from metal a simple bend. I had no idea where to start used some cardboard did this and it opened my mind to metal.
Next the the dogleg on one side was shot had to fab the inner side
Then got the floor in
this felt good learning and make progress so went on to patching up the pass side door. Appairently when you put spray foam inside the door it rust alot faster lol.
repairing
and bam

Next thing I had to do was tackle the window metal. I had ordered a peice that was hand made for the front. It was far from perfect..... Thought alot better than what I could of done so not complaining. First I mounted the safaris so I would have some guideline.
replacement peice
off with the old.
on with the new
looks easy right no here are some stuff I had to fix
notice the angle not correct turned nice thought

Now I made a discovery the latches at the bottom wouldn't work for some reason. They were sitting to far back and wouldn't allow the safari latch to hook them without breaking so I made some.
Now the radio was fun.
Ended up pretty nice.
This is where things got crazy, the guy shut down the shop and I couldnt get to it to work much at all..... ended up getting the front suspension under it and patching up one tail light hole and one window covered
Well I proposed to my g/f at the time around and decided that I wonted to have this thing done before my wedding. So I got the bus to my house in my garage in Jan 2008. The wedding was Aug 2nd so I got work. _________________ Jonathan

Started on the cargo rockers
had to get all the rust stuff out that was the hardest part...
That was done on to the next thing the rear drivers corner. I figured the old one was beyond me to fix so got a used one from the samba. Was old there was no bondo yeah.......
got mad started removing the old corner.
hammered the new old replacement back into some sort of usable peice
decided to use part of the side from the new one to help line it all up.
It worked realy well lined up
before I installed it repaired the fender splash area.
welding
corner fitted and done. _________________ Jonathan

Here is a picture of the drivers side before it went to my house in all its nasyness
So next was to take out that rocker... killed the rust finished cleaning it all (prep work sucks) started back on it
With that out of the way went to patch up the window hole. I had someone cut the metal out of a panel, but it was so warped and messed up wasnt worth anything. So sat down thought about it and stole all of the braces from that peice of metal.
Welded those in then made alot of measurements got some sheet metal trimed to fit
and mud
didnt take alot of mud either I was relay suprised that I didn't warp the crap out of it....
now while I couldn't work on the bus I was pulling strings and doing what I could. I didn't have a engine the old one had a rod sticking out of the top of the case. Found this baja new engine
put a used engine pulled the mexican engine down and put it in the bus. Sold the baja for what I had in it was back on top. _________________ Jonathan

I also got the seat frames and wheels sand blasted. etched primed and back. while working at my house got the wheels to my buddy (guy who taught me alot) for paint. .
sorry for no pictures of the work being done
Seats turned out nice. Used the hair materail from WW.
Got the gas tank bladered at a local radiator shop.
Oh yeah found this picture of the old engine
nice huh dont know how someone pulled that one off.
I also got nates offset spring plates in and the transaxle installed
Went to put decklid on and found out that the stupid screws were broken off.... All off them. The decklid was hanging by some screen door hinges..
So went into the engine bay cut the metal to get to the strips. Took the metal peice out drilled and retaped the holes. So that worked nicely got the decklid back on.
got wheels back from paint
dog was out in the shop with me working alot lol
little mutt kept getting into anything he could.
Cleaned the engine up alittle repainted all the tins
Por 15 is your friend lol
painted the gas tank and installed it
Finally got the bus down on 4 wheels rolled it out for the first time in a few months

Now back to work, Battery tray install
Now engine this was a bid night
Installed it found out the beetle transaxle was no good... stuck in first so pulled it and got another it was whining. So got it rebuild thats the short story anyways.
Now for some primer
went to hook up the pedals found out that the clutch hole wasn't in the right spot. did some measureing and just made a new "patch" section out of some crap.
Even got my girl to help out alittle was a hot long day.
