This is the fuse box in my 1985 Wolfsburg Westfalia Vanagon.I want a cover for it.I have been told that the cover below should fit it but I don't see how.Can anyone confirm that this is so,or if not point me in the direction of the correct fuse cove(if any)-part no.etc.?Perhaps someone will recognise this particular box.
Thanks.Alan

The fuse cover that fits yours will be a clear, plastic cover that snaps in place over your fuses. The cover in your pic is for an 86+.

Spend enough time and money, and you can make anything fit.... For eight bucks, I wouldn't dream of wasting any time trying to retrofit that newer one. _________________ '69 Mike

Here's another one of them deals where VW mixed & matched parts.
The fuse box cover pictured is brown and fits an 84 or 85 Vanagon--fit mine as well as a bunch of other's.
The fuse box pictured must be a left over from and earlier model that some disgruntled worker fit into an 85.
I have never seen an 85 with the ealy fuse box pictured--an early 84 possibly could have been fit with a left over 83 fuse box---
Strange stuff ---- _________________ T.K.

TK, so when was this change made? 85 seems to be a bit of an oddball year. Mine was built 20 Dec 1984, has the late slider, cast lower control arms, and the early fuse box. WTF? _________________ Clark

Clark,
There are so many oddities to a 85 Vanagon, it's difficult to pin point when VW did anything to any specific vehicle--and from what I have seen there is nothing definate.
Like this fuse box cover--
In the VW parts bok from 84 to 85 they allegidly had a full fuse box cover.
Nothing off the wall like a snap on clear cover is even mentioned.
I have never seen that fuse box pictured here other than in real early ( 80 to 83 ) Van's.
The parts number for all brown 84 & 85 fuse box cover's is;
251 937 90V
And thats it.
The Back late model cover is;
251 937 01C
The Brown cover's are all now NLA--I bought them all from VW and I have depleted my stock of them--they are all gone forever.
It's real heard to pin point the cut off dates of old inventory, and when or where VW switched parts to current parts number's available part number's.
It's pot luck with what they used in production at any given time. _________________ T.K. |

To make that cover fit, you need more parts.
Early 85 had early wiring.
Late 85 (Wolfsburg models) had the later wiring which had the cover.
You need to look at a later van to see what you need. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

<<Early 85 had early wiring.>>
& some late 84's had later wiring & later model fuse boxes.
<<Late 85 (Wolfsburg models) had the later wiring which had the cover.>>
So did some of the GL's, & Westfalia's.
I don't think VW had any set rules of the road with parts placement.
There are too many inconsistencies and off the wall odd, parts installation's at near the end of a year or change of model's.
Like brown interiors for example.
I've seen brown interior's in 86 Vanagon GL's that should have grey.
Some folks say they've seen 87's with brown interior's--
It's just another crazy VW thing. _________________ T.K. |

So the point here is you need to see what parts you need to make the fuse box cover work. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

The fuse box cover pictuerd is for an 83.5 to 85 later style fuse box.
The fuse box pictured is an earlier vintage that somwhow got built into an 85.
How?
I'm not sure, but I sure haven't seen anything quite like this before.
An 80 to early 83 fuse box cover would be a direct fit in this case. _________________ T.K. |

My December 84 (85 model year) Vanagon Westfalia has the same fuse box. The cover is clear plastic.
The Westfalia owner's handbook shows this fusebox and has the description of fuses. With all due respect, I think it's correct for what it is. My Westfalia also has a smaller "add on" fuse block to the right of the fuse box which is also factory.
If desired, I can scan and post copies of the handbook
This is the correct cover:

(Slightly off tonic) I reverse engineered that bigger cover a while back and 3D Printed it. With a couple of more tweaks it should work... |
