Slight external differences, some have wipers, some don't, raised lock or not. All bolt up and with paint http://www.gti16v.com/vwcolors.htm only you will know.

Thanks for the replies. My '91 has the lock the pops out, must have been replaced once. I have a replacement from a '85 has the larger flush opening for the lock. Don't have the lock yet. The seal(grommet) for the lock is there, is the lock all I need or is there another seal/grommet?
Thanks Again!

Don't later version have a round VW emblem in the middle that the earlier ones don't have?

My '89 has the round VW badge in a recess in the middle of the rear hatch.

One word of advice. If you have the hatch off and the new hatch will have a wiper and defroster, might as well replace the rubber boots that cover the wiring and hose for the wiper, washer and defroster. It isn't required that the hatch be off for this but it makes it easier and you'll have to pull the wires and washer hose out anyway. Also be advised that there are left and right versions for the boots so be sure to get the right parts.
