Here's a strange one... I don't get it, maybe somebody else here can help me out. I had new tires put on today (195-70R14) NEXEN - 83.5 std. vanagon on 14" Steelies. When I took the van in, the basic vw flatties with embossed vw stayed on the wheels... no problem. Since i got the tires replaced, I lost 2 on the way home. (I stopped and got 'em. ) They don't stay over the wheel "nubs" all the way. I wonder what changed?
Any ideas? Can I fix it.
Thanks...

Load rating. Any tire that with a load rating above C will fail. Look at the Load Rating on the side wall of the tire.
A "C" rating So-so, "D" rating good. "E" Very Good.
Just the reverse of School grades. Lower the Load Rating, the better. Maybe that why I liked F's!

If you are really running a P-metric 195-70R14 tire, you are way under the load rating. Take them back and get something better. Losing hubcaps on the way home from having tire work done is fairly typical. I like to go around and test all of mine to make sure they are on well before I pull out. |

No, that's cool Tikibus.. My tires are now:
195R14 8PR - 106/104 R LT NEXEN
I am Very happy with the tires, the Vanagon handles so much better!!!
The problem is: I can't keep the hubcaps on the wheels now.
I think the tires are 8-ply, a big change from the cracked and mismatched passenger tires that came with the vehicle when I bought it in June for $400.00
In fact, I now have more $ in tires than the entire Vehicle, but I am not complaining... I feel safer...

No Sweat. But I got confused on why the hub cap kept coming off.
What the question really is the load bearing weight of each tire. Many posts, inquires into what tire(s) are correct for Vanagon.
Look deep for the "Ultimate Wheel Post".
I'd drive "Mad Max" style if having issues. Bear in mind on the purchased tire(s) that the soft/hard formulation of rubber can be of an issue. _________________ Happy Trails!

I wonder if it is the heat of the sun causing metal expansion so the area for the hubcap placement has been expanded.... I do know that the side of my hand is in pain because of trying to get these things on... hmnnnn
Trying to think this through

Rated at min. 2800# per wheel. Got the caps on. It seems one cap has a wider lip, by like 1/8 inch. So.. I put that on the proper wheel and... voila!
Pics...
CAPS ON
TIRES ON...
Thanks for putting up with me... Yeah, I read the tire posts at length and arrived at what I got here.
