In this thread, I will document the history, and work performed, on "typ311dave's"

62 golfblau Typ 311 Limousine

I have worked on the car many times, since Dave received it, about 1994

One time the notch needed brakes.. we had the shoes relined.
The shop we used, still had the tools, to reline shoes and arc them...
Early 311 shoes were riveted, and that's the way we kept them.

I have owned many Volkswagen's.

If anyone knows my car more than me it's Theron (Mobiletune), he's a newbie to theSamba and the Type 3 forum, so everybody please give him a warm welcome to the fold, he definitely know's Type 3's (any ACVW's for that matter) and will be a welcome addition to the forum.

Great pics Theron, you got some oldies in here...

This will be a new thread to update everyone on the resto on my early May '62 (0 045 075) Notchback. Grey market from Kiel, Germany, and the earliest documented (registered) Type 3 on the west coast; there is no earlier car out there that's been on the west coast longer.

So me and the OG-Unit Crew; Mobiletune, Jimmy Braxmeyer, and Neil (Lonotch) will be updating you on the unfolding drama and sequence of events on the resto.

It all begins here, get the popcorn ready...

Looking at the pictures, nothing really has changed much. I see the front indicators and the interior, but not the fuel filter. Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Busted! Shame on you Laughing

You mentioned shoe relining: should old shoes be saved? How about pads? My thinking is one day supplies will be like the 1500.

That is an impressive amount of cars you have owned! Shocked When I saw the avitar in your second post on theSamba, I knew it was you. Wink Your bus is so recognizable, especially when braking! You have enough lights to blind the driver that gets too close! Wink Laughing

Is Mobiltune just for Volkswagens? I never gave it a thought until I saw the Fords and thought of my Brother's '65 Fairlane.

Why do you need to put a copyright notice? It is not like it is needed...

I will put in a plug for Theron: as one can see just from the post, he is meticulous. When working, one is also learning from him, and explains if requested.

Actually, I have a fuel filter from the tank to the fuel pump, and from the fuel pump to the carb. Overkill? Yeah probably....

Save your shoes! unless you let them munch your drum, you should be fine. You could always have them relined as long as you have a place that can do it. You can either go with the new shoe with the glued on pad, or take your shoes to somebody that can rivet the pads on to factory specs. I thought you had disc?

If you want it done old skol, Canfield Brakes in Lemon Grove will do it for you.

I meant the filter in the engine compartment. I think you are wise to have two filters, but I like to have them out of the engine compartment. I hate to see a auto go in flames from a fuel filter...

I keep everything including the old brake fluid! Laughing I see the way the 1500 has gone, and the 1600 is next. It might not be for 10 years, but I still will have parts to rebuild. Wink

"This guy came out of a parking lot, at a 45 degree angle pointing at me, crossed the passenger lane,
and hit me as I was driving in the no.1 lane. Passenger side to passenger side impact.
I guess he thought that he was going to drive over the 8 inch high and 6 foot wide island that separates
east bound lanes from the west bound lanes...I slammed on my brakes but it was too late."

"Most of repair will be to the passenger side fender, I'll post pics soon, will need to straighten and rechrome bumber,
and some tweaks to make the front trunk hood close properly. Front apron is undamaged and perfect, front beam just fine.
Pan and inner body shell fine with the exception of a small stress fracture on passenger side, otherwise was lucky as hell it wasn't worse.

I'll be posting pics tonight. Gotta go, the insurance saga continues....."

Glad to see progress on the car.......looking at the pics in the gallery, out of curiosity why would you contaminate the metal with an oil (wd-40) that could come back and ruin a paint job later?
I hope it does'nt cause a problem.But there are better things to put on bare metal like a metal prep.

Yeah, you could say we made a mistake there.....and we were severely reprimanded, thank you for reminding me. Wink

The body is being thoroughly cleaned of all oils at this time.

I didn't want to come across sounding mean, but i've had some strange stuff happen to paint with less contamination.

Just looking out for the old girl , with all you'r doing i'd hate to see something bad pop out of the paint later.

No worries. That was the point of discussion from Jimmy (the reprimand). I guess you could say we were thinking short term, to prevent the bare metal from rusting. We didn't realize long term that it was a no-no. Had we have known, we wouldn't have created the blunder, it's all a learning experience anyway.

I blasted the notch with hundreds of gallons of water.
rubbed my fingers to the bone, removing hundreds of pounds of paint,
rust, and dirt. got burned by acid, paint remover, and fire..
I made damn sure the metal made it to painter rust free!

Note: Don't wear flip-flops when applying the acid, or scraping the paint with the acid still on it. Evil or Very Mad

As a professional mechanic, and have worked many restores
and after seeing many Hack paint jobs, it is my job to make the surface
unpaintable to hacks

however, light oil coating, is no issue to a professional
further

NOTE: this NOS fender is back at ISPwest, waiting for you. I think it was a '64-'65 it has no hole for the side light, or trim holes.
