The neighbourhood is a bit of a Vanagon heaven, but most are showing their age, a little worse for wear or moldy looking westys. But what do I see on the side street behind my old building, a very nice unit MBZ wheels, a Kompressor badge on the rear hatch, and a "ML 5" badge on the other side of the hatch. And a Mercedes star on the front grill. All looking very nice.
Wonder what is under the rear hatch? Something supercharged I guess by the kompressor badge!

Hey, nice Mercedes. I coulda sworn that was a VW, though.
What does he have under the engine hatch? Probably a 2.1L horizontally opposed, normally aspirated VW (oops, sorry!), no make that Mercedes wasserboxer.
But it does look ciul. |

That is a nice touch! May have to borrow that...just measured the rear emblem that has been stolen and replaced from my 1999 MBZ ML 430,(48.00 each) and it is a perfect fit. Also very fond of the MBZ wheels on a Vanagon. On my previous 1991 Westfalia, the PO had put a TOWN CAR emblem on the back and I got so many comments on that. It is funny, no one got the HOME V license plate but everyone loved the TOWN CAR emblem. I may have to borrow the KOMPRESSOR idea as well.
Thanks for sharing with us!

The older these things get, the less people remember them.
I took my 87 to a big family get together a few states away last weekend. There were several guests that asked what the hell it was, and didn't remember VW making something like that....
I could have put Merc logos on it, and people would have belived it. _________________ '69 Mike

Put this on my van, and now can run any fuel and climb vertically to 20,000'. Chicks dig it as well.

I've been thinking about this. Don't you think that modified peace sign is a little common? I saw this on a shiny red little scoot the other day. Wouldn't it be a better replacement for our VW emblems?

Here is a shot of the install: 420 Shaft to 10,000', 320 at 20,000', run on gas, avagas, diesel, jet A,B, JP5, ethanol, biodiesel, wino blood. It meters by density on a power output feedback loop. Not super specific fuel consumption, but not bad for what it does. It was a fun project, kept it for about three years.

Then come the brake upgrades, the wipers won't stay on the glass, poptop shutter, then the mirrors won't stay put... Totally more trouble than it's worth..... _________________ '69 Mike

Well, seeing how the Trident symbol was used by Greek gods to create bodies of water (like a T3 head gasket) and earthquakes (similar to "Vanagon syndrome"), I would say you are correct. Kind of ironic that Maseratis, which were never known for their reliability, used the Trident as their symbol as well. It looks like the exhaust would have to be modified to fit in the engine bay, and my fabrication ability is kinda thin, so.... I guess I'll just have to pass on this one. Though the wide array of fuel choices, except the one, does make it tempting. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Some folks do find that fuel source less than tempting, but it is virtually free. There is this guy, I think he is being discussed in another thread concerning milage here, who sells the 'Hobo Juicer.' You can get all the winos you want apparently, with only the use of kind words and the promise of a hot meal. Gets about 160 miles to the wino, depending on either wine or malt liqueur drinker.
In these hard times we must explore all resources. We should exploit all the sources of fuel before we drill in the wilderness areas. We have been cultivating winos for years they are one of our number one renewable energy resources. There s nearly an unending supply. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

Actually, I had it licensed Standard Normal Airworthiness. Sea Level to 10,000' in 4.5 minutes, off in 600'. It is up in the SF Bay area now, some guy put it on floats. Here is what it looked like when I test flew it:

Years ago, a truck spilled a small box of BMW parts on my street. In it I found some nice Beemer hood badges. I siliconed one over the VW emblem on my '86 Westy, for grins.
Every once in a while someone tells me "I didn't know BMW made these vans, too". |
