hi all,
ive just had all my spare tinware powdercated to change over to my bug and i used the 2 backing plates off an old genny but my bug has a stock 3 prong alternator
ive noticed the alt outter backing plate (the one u can see) has a hole drilled in it just below the alt but genny one doesnt have this seems to be the only difference
anyone know if this hole is important?

Some after market ( not OG) backing plates had a hole in them for a spark plug wire clips/ plastic holder...

i thought maybe that to being the holes are so similar in size
but all 3 of my 74 bugs with original german backing plates have them
just noticed none of my genny backing plates do and i powedercoated a genny one to swap over to my alternator when i drop the engine
cos apart from the hole there seeems to be no other difference

Interesting...Maybe something they started doing in the later model years... I have never seen the hole on the factory tin from earlier models but it has always been on the after market stuff.

they were late 74 australian assembled engines
1 was the AS 1600 from my super and the other 2 were AR 1300 twin ports from my 1300 beetles all built after 8/74
