|
|
So Guys I know that I haven't posted in a while...and I wanted to let you know that I have decided to go ahead with a huge undertaking. I want to put reduction boxes on mt IRS. I know this can be done, I was looking at one this weekend.
Does anyone have any info on how the inner working would go. And I mean on getting the stub axles and the redux boxes properly fitted. I know how the redux themselves work. =] The way that I think that it goes, tell me if I'm wrong, is that you have to torque the nut on a long spline stub axles with a collar, to take up the extra space, just as if you were torquing up the swing axle. Now if the info that I got was correct the swing axles that the redux came off are a short spline and that is why you would need a collar. The only other part would be to create a mounting bracket that is beefy enough to take the higher torque of the boxes, and i should be good to go...right?
I am also going to be fabbing up some lift spindles for the front. Nothing as sweet and elaborate as the ons that BCR creates, but along the same lines.
So as I start to get all this done I will definatly keep you posted with pics. I prolly wont get any of this started until after labor day weekend. But I want to gather as much info as I can before hand.
Any one know where I can get a set of good redux boxes pretty cheap?
I also posted this over on STF.
-Ben
Here is a pic of the setup to prove that i saw it....and why i want to do it.

yea...i hear you. When i was told by my buddy that his uncle has a redux setup i thought that it was cool...but when i found out that it was IRS i was intrigued. He says that they work great, he bought them from a guy that use to run them in the mud all the time. _________________ Semper Fidelis

Well that picture sure makes a statement... you gonna build new trailing arms or "copy" what was done there?
biggest thing I didn't see in your plan was the fact that the Diff in your tranny has to be flipped, those redux boxes are only 2 gears inside so they reverse your wheel direction, hence flipping the diff to reverse it back again.
but yeah keeping moving forward (slowly ) _________________ (o=|=o) Life before play... Damn! it's gonna be awhile. |

Lower gearing maybe? But I have to admit with that much unsprung weight and leverage on the spring plates it seems like a ticking bomb.... I would think that if you really want a low gears AND irs just get a 091 or 002...seems like less work. |

Well there is also the benifit of ride height. This is a way to get 3" of lift. And i also have to say....why not? isnt half the fun coming up with new ways to do things...and just building stuff. _________________ Semper Fidelis

I have to agree with Rick here and say yes it can be done but why would you really want to.
Just regear the tranny _________________ “It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”

we get it, more lift. longer arms, bigger tires, keep it swing axle? just my suggestions. The only person I've heard of actually doing this ended up destroying it because it was too much stress on the suspension. _________________ OGST | CU05 | OGJHC

The setup in the pic is running 34x9.5 Swampers TSLs in the rear and 32x9.5 in the front. Doesnt have any problem. The guy use to run it through mud holes alot down here in florida. _________________ Semper Fidelis

Im going to have to say for the frustration and K.I.S.S theory, id say, invest in your 3x3's and coil overs. with the tires spaced out you could run whatever tire you want, and you dont have to worry about the boxes giving out on you, plus fabing up some craziness to get the IRS redux going. Or spend the money and buy a 002 or 091 for the power, i know you mostly want the height, but with the arms and bigger tires youd have that too... _________________ "Do It In The Dirt"

I totally agree. I have a redux trans baja (see my pics) with the Johnson laydown adapters, my biggest concern is blowing up a reduction box. Redux parts are getting expensive and will only continue to do so. if you are just looking for lift and gear reduction (and you are good at fabrication) go with a chain drive system. The mud bog guys have been doing it for a long time.
What type of driving do you plan on doing? If it is doing slow trails, rock crawling, or putting around town I would build it! If you plan on driving fast off road, driving in sand, or spinning dough nuts (how I blew a redux box), then IMO your time and talents would be better served with IRS 002,091 and 3x3's or 5x5's. |

I plan on driving on fairly slow trails and climbing decent hills. We probably dont go over 30 MPH most of the time. Every now and again we get on it but only on open raods, which are few and far between. There are no sand dunes here in florida, at least not where we offroad. There are a few sand pits, but i dont enjoy going in them. I want the power and the height.
Can anyone suggest the best adapters to get good height out of the redux.
Jamnajar...how do those laydown adapter work out? Are they worth it? _________________ Semper Fidelis

I got mine from this guy. Takes about three weeks for him to make them. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=26181 Search for bugzilla adapters. _________________ Throw me a bone here. All I wanted were

(my project is a 68 baja, swing axle & 1600 dual port,, all stock as far as I know,, bought it at a yard sale) |
