That's too funny. That is my nephew, and I had just given that to him after an Easter Egg hunt. He popped it about an hour later
The 67 was a great car, bought from the OG owner (a tenant of my Mom's), and it was totalled by an azz at my university who was driving a automatic Volvo Station wagon with his right leg in a cast. Rear ended me doing 50 mph, while I was stopped in traffic leaving the college. Shoved the engine into the rear luggage compartment, and he had no insurance and my insurance totalled it. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Here is my first bus from 1991:
That's right, bamboo rear bumper and front over riders. The bus had serious east coast rust, it had a Rhode Island dealer sticker on the rear hatch. It was sold to an SV2s member in San Diego in 1999. |

My first "bus" was a '74, however my first split was my '67 13 window. It had been sitting engineless for 20 years when I bought it in Dec 2004 for $500, it was running at the end of April '05 and I started driving it regularly that June. I was 19, and it was far from my first VW, but it was the first that I ever really tore into and really had to work on and figure stuff out for myself. I was very proud of myself when I got it driving. Driving that Bus that summer was probably the most fun I've had in a VW so far.
The Bus and I the night that it first ran.

My first bus was a 1969 Riviera camper back around '97 but my first split bus was a 1960 Westy. I sold it off to Europe back around '03 and wish I still had it. Most of the interior wood & paint was OG and it had the wash basin with hose, pump and water tank stuff, original child cot, tent poles but no tent, ambulance fans, clam shell lights. I converted it over to IRS and it had a nice rebuilt 1600 single port motor which made it a great daily driver for a few years. I still kick myself for getting rid of it.

Bought my first bus in '90, here it is in '91...stinger, and lowered with redux boxes. The roof clip install was my welding class project.

My first bus: 1959 Mango Standard no export code.
Bought in Columbia, MO in 2003 but it spent most of it's life in So. CA
After welding in some repair panels I sold it to a friend because I found a deluxe in 2006.
Friend lost interest in 2007 and I bought it back.
Wife screamed about the money and I had no where to keep it so I sold it
on the samba to an apparent flipper who quickly painted it, and sold it for a profit.
Should have kept it as I could have been driving it by now.
Wish I knew where it ended up.
But I still have lots of rust work to do on the deluxe. I guess the 59 was my "practice" bus.
Should have spent the summer working on my 65 deluxe but a "Fat Chick" got in the way.

My first bus was and still is a '61 Westy that was in sad shape but it didn't need any heavy rust repair, app. 1998:
Been driving/camping the heck out of it for 7 years now all over the south west:

Not a split. My first bus was a 75 Westy that took me all over....including two trips down the Baja (from Canada). This bus, and the places it took me, are what got me hooked on VW's. Soon after I bought a 65 Westy (which I recently purchased back from the guy I sold it to over 20 years ago), and a 55 23 window (the seat from it can be seen facing back in the 75 westy...yes, 6 legs). Stopped counting after 40 busses owned. That's me (with hair) at the front
