GOOD JOB!
Are you sure this job needs to be redone every 3 years????? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

every three years!
God I hope not.
I resealed mine with a gowesty kit a few months ago and everything was A-OK. Then, on my last fill up two weeks ago, it pissed gas everywhere!
I cussed up a storm and dropped the tank AGAIN that weekend. It turns out the grommet for the filler tank line was ripped in half. Gowesty guaranteed the part (yeah gowesty), but I was still pretty grumpy having to drop the tank twice in one summer.
I hope to never do this again and would never consider doing it every three years for fun! You are CRAZY. |

well I'm on a 3 year average, we have "cocktail" gas here in Birmingham which is hard on the seals ...maybe? Who knows maybe the seals are just a POS
and not I'm not crazy I thought it was PITA , but not worth paying someone
so do ya think the page is "sticky" worthy? _________________ 1984 Westy 2.0 Jetta ABA Motor/1.8 head converted to auto tranny, with 180,000 on body, 55K on engine and transmission

Thanks for the write up. I already have the Go Westy kit and and I am going to tackle this job next weekend.
Could you do me a favor and turn off the green background so I won't burn up an ink cartridge when I print it out? I could go grayscale, but I'd like to have the pictures in color. _________________ 1985 Weekender, Auto Trans. |

I'm going to be doing this in the next few weeks, and as a newbie to repairing my Westy (not driving it...that I've been doing for a long time, but repairing: that's new) you have made my day. I intend to run inside every few minutes, check your pics and notes, then run back...or walk back...outside and resume. Thanks from a neophyte. That is why I LOVE this site and you people....
Was that too much?
Now what about that installed fuel pressure gauge. I'd be interested in commentary and pics on how you installed that and where! _________________ 85 Westy: The Green Machine

hmmm...well thanks...I know if it weren't for this site...and the intenet I wouldn't be able to afford or work on my van....this place and community is a group effort
I'll take some pictures and do a write of the fuel pressure gauge...I might just do all my gauges...some like the idiot lights some don't (I have both) ...I do feel you become a slave to them...but it keeps me entertained and I can tune out the kids! _________________ 1984 Westy 2.0 Jetta ABA Motor/1.8 head converted to auto tranny, with 180,000 on body, 55K on engine and transmission

Mission accomplished! Nothing like spending 5 hours crawling around under your van breathing gas fumes. That was about a much as fun as... well, nothing.
Kayak, Did you get the expansion bottles back in all the way? I couldn't get the oval in the bottle to fit into the depression in the body and get the bolt hole lined up. When I pulled them out the ovals in the body were completely filled with packed sand and dirt. I think it deformed the bottles over time. _________________ 1985 Weekender, Auto Trans. |

no I couldn't either, that's why I went with that one picture with the RTV to help support the expansion tanks _________________ 1984 Westy 2.0 Jetta ABA Motor/1.8 head converted to auto tranny, with 180,000 on body, 55K on engine and transmission

That rocks. Good article. I was supposed to do this last weekend but I had to help out a friend with a house renovation (long story) I'm glad I caught this before doing it- certainly saved my a trip halfway through to go buy more fuel line. I bought the grommets and orings through the dealer for $28 cad and the t line was $70 so I was going to wait and see but maybe I'll go for broke and replace it too ( I have extra money from working last weekend. _________________ When my time comes I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandpa- not screaming like the passengers in his car.

Kayakwesty the earthlink link is dead. Also I just got the reseal kit from van-cafe , any difference from the gowesty kit... I saw one on vanagain that claimed it was more complete, but it didn't say how, and cost $20 more than what I paid. Anyway, waiting for them to come in and hopefully your link wil be up so I can print it and test it
Ok, I found a way to access everything go to http://home.earthlink.net/~mark.cumnock/westfalia/
and from the top there you will see different topics to click on
kayak, I loved your disclaimer
"*** Okay let me note if you do any of the above I just posted it will kill you, and YOU WILL blow yourself up and the surrounding 5 block neighboorhood. You will make the 6 o'clock news and your kids will be orphans. Then the lawyers will get involved and ban all people from working on their own vans, later the politicians will get involved and ban all the Westys ...thanks to you no less ...so how do you live with yourself ? ***" _________________ 1986 vanagon poptop wolfsburg edition |

The bed liner is a good way to retard any further rusting of the tank--especially up on the top.
The only thing I would alter is; forget about adding any foam strap insulation tape.
It'll hold water and rust faster--even with the bed liner under it.
It'd be a better deal to just bedliner the tank & the straps, let it set up and then bolt the straps up to the tank. _________________ T.K. |
