Well, I'd say that it probably wasn't common, but it's very possible.
Heck, a solid standard was probably a little cheaper. |
What does that mean? |
Someone who was a little tighter on cash might've been inclined to get a solid standard, as opposed to a two-tone. |
Still confused..so you're implying that a solid 15 would have been cheaper?? _________________ Boz

Once again, what does that mean? (pertaining to this bus). It's a 15w hardtop deluxe, not a standard, and not a base model kombi. I would think a solid red 15 would be special order status and therefore more expensive, not less. |

So, Lotus White deluxes were cheaper than two toned ones? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

It just seems to me that a solid color bus would be cheaper than two-tone.
If it was more expensive, then that just seems backwards to me. I would think asking them to leave off an extra color would save a little cash. However, I suppose if it was considered a "special order" then it might cost more.
But leaving something off resulting in a higher price just seems strange to me.
I won't lie, I'm not a whiz kid when it comes to buying cars. (considering I've only bought a bus. a used one, at that) When my sister ordered a special color paintjob on her car, it wasn't any more, though. she just had to wait a little longer to get it. _________________ Click to view image

Consider that it's not as simple perhaps, as "leaving off" a color. Production line run changed, dash/cab color changed, etc.. More work in the long run= more $$$$. As far as your sister's car, well, If she wanted it in an available,( but not in stock color ) that shouldn't cost extra. But if she wants a lavender (whatever) that is not an offered/used color on that year/model, I can pretty much guarantee you it will cost extra $$$$, that is if they will even do it at all, for any price. |

A single-tone passenger Bus like a Standard or Deluxe would be special order.
Except for Lotus White mentioned above since that was a standard order color scheme.
I would be interested to know if special order colors actually cost more or if you just had to wait. |
I can't see there being a price difference but like you said you'd have to wait. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Yeah, that does make sense.
I think I was looking at more of an individual basis, i.e. the material cost of each car than the production costs. _________________ Click to view image

Related anecdote - I was talking to an old guy this summer who had worked at various Calgary VW dealerships from the mid fifties up until retirement.
He was saying that the reason there are so few de Luxes up here was that the dealerships had a hard time getting them from the factory. (They all went to California?) Lower volume dealerships had less stroke, so they got fewer de Luxes.
"You want one that is a different colour? Hell, we can't even get you one that's a standard colour!"
Wonder if that is why there are these examples of Tourist Delivery de Luxes?
Tired of waiting for the dealership to get one - arrange the next holiday so we can tour Europe AND get that damned bus we've been waiting for. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge
