I'm going to look at an '83 Vanagon in about an hour. I know nothing at all about these vehicles.
The owner says it's not running.
He has no idea what's wrong with it, but the motor turns.
He says the body and interior are in great shape, no rust.

What/where are trouble spots I should look for?

Congratulations on your beautiful new-to-you Van!

Wash the engine, there are threads here telling you how to do that without wrecking things, AND...

Replace the fuel lines and the plastic junction on the firewall.

You're just getting to know it. Don't being your relationship with a van-be-cue.

Welcome to the Funny Farm! Search, and ye shall find!

Best!
