I got some wheels today and I'm wondering what their original application was. They are 15x5.5 and look like the usual stamped steel "sport" wheel found on '73 Sport Bugs with one exception. The four "spoke" stampings are not flat from the rim to the center cap, but rather they have a dip in them much like 4 lug Sprint Star spokes. They are stamped ET27. Any idea what they were from originally?

I remembered reading about those in the Car of the Century book so I looked it up. It says they were 26mm offset - ET26, not sure why yours would be ET27. VW had to change them to ET34 late in the 73 model year when the new strut design came out. I don't know if the stamped spoke pattern on the wheels changed any when the offset changed, that might be the difference you are seeing. Do your wheels have the little VW stamp on them?

Here's a couple of pics of the wheels, and no I didn't see VW stamped on them anywhere.

Ah, thanks for the pics. Nope, those aren't Sports Bug wheels.... here's a page from the Sports Bug dealer brochure:

They are not VW wheels. Measure the bolt pattern, I bet it isn't 4x130mm.

They look kind of like Kronprinz wheels:

Yes! They are stamped KPZ. Except for the little slots in the main spokes, they look the same. What did they come on originally, Type 3s?

I have no clue what they were originally intended for. You can always drop Kronprinz an inquiry.
