What is the best Porsche engine to swap into a VW beetle in terms of ease of swap? I was told the 80 HP vw914 engine drops right into place, no mods necessary, would a 911 engine fall into place without brain surgery?
I feel like if I were to buy another bug just to have a hot rod (I might) I wouldn't try to hot rod a 1600 block , rather Id swap an engine designed to do this from the factory.
Id love to just drop in a complete porsche engine.. what should I use? |

Do a search for TIV into T1. Or Type Four into Type one.
It's not a "drop-in" procedure.
Also, check out Jake Raby's stuff...he's the TIV guru around these parts. _________________ Nothing screams "poor workmanship" like wrinkles in the duct tape. |

If it were that easy EVERYBODY (exept the purists) would be running T-IV gear.
Completely different cooling gear. Yes, it will bolt up to the tranny, the ease of install stops about there. In its stock form (with cooling, etc.) it will not fit in the engine compartment. It will work in a baja but you will need a special flywheel (kennedy comes to mind) and a rear engine support for starters.... _________________ -—--------—-------

Just start with one of the special new cases on the market and add a nice turbo.... That'll get your hair standing on end.... Keep it a VW an you don't have to pay Porsche prices for parts and you get more power. _________________ '68 bug (Sadie)

Actually the best "Porsche" engine to use is a modified type 4 bus engine. Many have been done very well.
At least buy the video to see what is involved.

Use a performance Type 1. Unless you already have the "Porsche" engine for free it's cheaper to stay with a VW engine. _________________ Glenn

and more reliable, and cheaper to fix when it brakes and parts are more readily available |

the older type 4 engine in the 1960-69 porshe is allmost a drop in
but you would have to buy a up right kit and do some mods to the engine
bay of your bug it has been done with the 911 conversion but looks stuppid to me i just would stick with your type 1 and build it bigger |

Besides, you don't want to be one of those guys (or gals) to say "I've got a porsche engine in my bug". ... We've heard about those...lol _________________ '68 bug (Sadie)

Serious money any time that you have to do anything to a 911 engine.
A well built type 4 or a well built type 1 engine would give you significant kick in a beetle.
Performance does indeed cost money. How much you got? |

911 is a 6 cylinder and quite a bit longer and heavier.
Not a good option. _________________ Glenn

Here is a 911 in a Type 3. T-3 has a much bigger engine compartment, and they still had to do a lot of cutting.

You mean the 356/912 engine. The Type 4 wasn't put in a Porsche until late 1969 when they debut the 914. _________________ Glenn

If I recall correctly, the 912 basically used the Porsche 356 Super 90 engine until 912 production was discontinued in 1969.
When the 912e was built in 1976, it did use the basic type 4 2.0 engine that was being used in the 914-4 at the time.
It was a nice car and they actually made a fair number of them. |

The 912E (aka 923) was a stop gap so that Porsche had a low cost model after they stopped the 914 and before the 924 was ready.
Do some work the the engine and it was faster than the 911 of the same year. _________________ Glenn

If you are hell bent on sticking a porsche engine in the car, get the tranny along with it and graft in the whole assembly. No need to worry about flywheels and clutch compatibility.
I am trying to convince my father to let me stick this 914 gear (tranny and engine) into a '69 ghia vert he has parked in his barn. Would suprice the crap out of robert-ricer burner on the street If not, I'll see about scoring a ghia sedan for the project... _________________ -—--------—-------

They didn't start making the T-4 style engine until 1969. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
