SOOOO, I finally got around to pulling the left inner cv on my daily driver syncro due to gear oil leaking out of the cv boot. Lord have mercy!!! About a quart of gear oil drained out of it. The plug on the flange was out and floating around in there, hence the leak. Plug was fine so I permatexed it back in. New cv grease and bolted it back up. Amazing how gear lube will clean a cv.

Then I noticed the left outer cv had major play. Stuck my hand in there and one bolt was loose. As it turns out, the bolt snapped off and the other bolts were loose. So I tightened up the other five and let it go. Now I know why it made a clunk in back when in reverse.

Moral of the story is, If you hear a noise that it shouldn't be making, don't ignore it, fix it. I ignored it for a few years. Yikes. Could have left me stranded. Will have to yank it out later when I have more time and fix it right, yeah right like that will happen!!! Laughing Laughing

That story scares me! I hear odd noises all the time, which for the most part I ignore unless it seems like something I should look at.

Its the kind of story that gets told around the fire at a campout. We Vanagon owners have a different kind of scary story.
