Well, I finished my removable rear apron last night, Just 4 bolts allow you to pull the engine straight back, without removing anything from it. Just like the uprights. Laughing

oh, you late bay people with your fixed apron....ahhhh i remember the good ol days when i had to fight just to get that big heavy motor in my bus. all that's changed with my 69 with removable apron, a transmission that isn't fixed and all that room to work.

i will say this, i miss the late bay top engine access.

I've never found the apron in a late Bay to be a problem removing or installing an engine.

I pull the fan shroud off before removing engine and install the fan shroud after the engine is in. Very simple, about as much work as removing the early bay bumper, six SM screws and four bolts to get the valance off.

Why? It certainly doesn't need to come off to get the engine out. I don't remove anything from the engine when I drop it in a late Bay.

Should of clarified, if the pull is for a clutch part or seal, you bet in and out. If it for major work, off comes the fan housing and a lot of times the exhaust to.

I find it much easier to disassemle the engine or any of its peripherals with it out of the Bus and/or on a stand.

Totally agree, no need to pull anything. I don't know why this is such a hard concept for some to grasp. Pull it as one, take nothing off. Do the work away from the bus in the comfort of your own shop and put it back in as one. Give it a try and you will never go back...

Since I do not have a stand and work by myself I find it rather hard to lift a fully dressed engine onto the bench (or even a stand if I had one) by my onesy. Pulling the fan housing and exhaust while in the vehicle is a snap, especially the exhaust, once out pull the intake and tin, from that point I can grab the long block and lift it onto the bench.

What exactly is it you do infront of the fan shroud? you have some important parts installed there?

well when i pull the engine, the muir book says to unbolt the engine from the trans, and 2 of the bolts are behind it. and ive got the original, bigger fan shroud, not the smaller doghouse one and its kinda hard to fit my head back there.

and the one time i forgot about threading the accelerator cable through and i had to try and line it up without looking...

i just think having that birds-eye view might make it a lil easier to work on.
