|
Well, the weathers been pretty crappy over here this year. Almost every weekend and every week away we have had have been wet. Not much fun after a while. Then we made matters worse by getting a dog (Indy) who's box takes up the remaining flor space in the Westy.
It was time for something bigger. We had a good look at the options, and for a while even thought about moving away from VW, but we just couldnt do it.
Luckily, this is what we eventually found;
Its a 1991, VW LT31 Karmann Distance Wide
It was imported from Germany in July. Looked after by VW all of its 60,000 miles.
Thats a huge seating area, which converts to a huge double bed.
It has a full 'galley' style kitchen, with hot and cold running water, as well as the van having blown air heating (dont you know!).
The overcab bed is big enough for me and the missus, meaning we dont have to mess around making the bed every day.
And the best bit-its got its own bathroom!! Toilet/Sink/Shower-Luxury!
We'll now be able to camp all winter, and am looking forward to camping over Christmas. Good Times!! _________________ My name is Roy |

That is quite a beast. I've always liked the LT series trucks. You dont see many (or any) in the US. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

In the voice of larger accountant (Kevin?) from the American version of "The Office":
"Awesome!"
Anyone know how easy or hard it is to get parts for that rig?
Sweet ride man!

that thing is really nice! great purchase. are the LTs diesel? While that seems to be in excellent condition I would be so excited to customize it a bit. I'd step up the wheels/tires and maybe give it some aggressive tread, a sporty paint job, and change out all the fabric (upholstry and curtains) to something really sharp. Like a rally car support vehicle or something. It has the potential to look kind of tough, I think I'd play that up.
sweet. I want one. _________________ '77 Bay Window / '89 Caratsburg (aka. the Stormtrooper) |

Its a 2.4 trurbo diesel. The 'performance' actually isnt bad considering im basically carrying a small house around. Its happy to sit at 100 KPH all day.

I dont think ill do anything that drastic, but am definately going to invest in a bull bar to toughen up th front end. Im not sure what the wheel options are, but i think the are fairly limited!!

don't get any more dogs or have any kids otherwise you'll end up buying a real beast like the one i just got....
anyway, awesome LT, i love karmann campers. a syncro gypsy is high on my dream list. in fact my real dream is to mimic the karmann campers but built a totally custom rig on an old syncro GL. |

Where is the engine? Under the table in back? Looks really cool, you should have fun in it. That rig screams salmon fishing all winter in Scotland to me for some reason.

Any idea yet what the mpg range is?
I could get spoiled with all that space.... _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

It looks to be the perfect vehicle for an extended stay cause it's not one of those huge rolling refrigerators. Not huge and it's big enough to be quite comfortable.
Nice find. _________________ -Matt |

Now that is a real beast, vwlovr! I dont think the neighbours would like that parked in the drive!

The engine is in the cab, under the seats. To access it the passenger seat flips up. Surprisingly its not that loud (or i have become acustommed to it!)
I dont know about fishing in the winter, but it will definately be going up to The Orkneys (off the top of Scotland) for our annual trip next year. Im sure we will have a few q's behind us on the A9 next year.

I havent worked it out yet, Levi, but i estimate about 25 mpg. It seems to have huge fuel tanks, but im not sure how big as i have always chickened out at £80! Luckily fuels coming down over here at the moment.
We took it out for a bit of a drive at the weekend, and its not too big to take out to run a few errands but the Vanagon feels very cosy when you get back in it now!!

I love it. It's a doll.
As an RV owner and VW enthusiast, I think you've stumbled on a perfect combo.
Enjoy! |
