Great forum, I just found it via Thomas's Oldspeed-Register
Just wanted to share my 40 horse vintage speed project that's now up and running (how I wish this forum existed when I was researching this ).
Thanks to all the guys off here who already helped me out (esp. Glenn - cheers!).
The motor is the original 1200 40hp in my '65 bug. It blew an exhaust valve last year, and we decided to build it back up using some vintage speed tuning for a bit of fun. Here it is back in and at VW Action last month...
We decided to go down a different route to an Okrasa kit, originally for cash reasons (ironically ) and then fell in love with the idea of basing it on the original 373 single port heads and seeing what we could get out of that.
We had the heads worked on by GAC Motorsport, a really good Formula Vee specialist here in the UK...
Before
After
They did some pretty extensive work, you might notice there's a whole fin missing. The compression is 9:1, which makes for a pretty exciting motor.
The motor spec is...
Matching number 40hp case, line-bored
83mm barrels and pistons (1384cc)
Original 373 single port heads, ported, polished, etc.
Fully balanced bottom end, rods & pistons
Riechert Twin NOS Solex 34's and single port manifolds
Knecht air filters
Bolt-up 1.1:1 Rockers
9:1 Compression
Engle 100 cam
Fram bypass oil filter
Mr Wob Abarth 4-tip exhaust
Bosch VJR4BR25 Distributor (cheers Glenn)
6 volt system.
All the build work was done by our good friend Ian. It went through its first 500 mile run-in and tune-up ok, when we're up to 1000 it's going in to be dyno'd to get the set-up fine tuned and see how many horses it's producing.
Cheers

That looks great. Great photo too.
I'm definitely interested in hearing the horsepower rating.
One suggestion... I'd paint the regulator casing black so it looks vintage too. _________________ How to Post Photos

Awesome shot. That's sort of the look I'd like for the motor in Herbie. _________________ Yeah I like Herbie AND New Beetles. Got a problem with it? Tough.

bass, yes definitely; though you'll probably find more input on the "perf VW engines" forum here on thesamba since that comes up regularly there. Your choices are Kadron (SP manifolds found used), "Baby" Dell'Orto 34FRD with aluminum SP manifolds (once again, used) and I think you can now buy NEW Solex single-throat kits with SP manifolds (CB Performance or aircooled.net). |

You also have the option of Weber 34 ICT w/ new aluminum SP manifolds. These are all for 1300-1600 SP heads of course. _________________ 1965 Beetle sedan

Hi Vic, nice thread.
I discovered an og 373 head in the garage last night (whilst looking for something else). Would you like it as a spare?
I've also received my twin carbs in the post this week - I think you'd be interested to see them!
I'm getting there with the parts - the look is definitely coming together now. Thanks for the inspiration.
Cheers,
Dave |

Very cool work ther and a SUPER clean looking bug.
I just cranked my 1385 for the first time last weekend using a 100 cam and the 373 heads, 1.1:1 rockers as well as a '65 case.
I am pretty happy with the results so far. Only about 40 minutes run time on the stand so far though.
