Hello, I own a 72 1302 superbeetle.
Is it possible that it had a 3 speed wiper??
the lever has four positions: OFF / OFF / SLOW / FAST, and I wonder if the second "OFF" was for a intermitent wiper
Thanks

It's possible. Try to trace the relay behind the fuse box.

That's a good question but I don't know exactly what replay went in the car you have.

Does the wipers work when you pull on the switch (should spray water on windshield if your sprayer works and then wipe 3 times).

I don't know if your model had that option.

The lever is in the steering colunm, it is not the dashboard pull-push type. The entire washer mechanism was removed by a previous owner, and I put a electrical pump in the bottle.
I guess that the 3-speed relay was replaced by a 2-speed one... so maybe if I found the correct relay it should work, shouldn't it?

Your wiper switch may be a later type, and was installed when the original failed. See this thread.

My 73 has 4 positions. Bottom is off, next up is off, next up is slow, top is fast. I just figured the very bottom one was for the windshield washer function (mine is removed). Is this not correct?

73s didn't come with a 4-position switch so it must have been replaced at some point. In this case it would appear the lower position is for intermittent. See the link I posted. Pulling the lever toward you would activate the washers.

I have a 72 super, made in '71 that has the same column lever.
off/off/slower/slow.
That's moving the lever from bottom to top.

Weird the manual doesn't state anything about the other position:

I'm guessing that if they are similar to my '75, someones played Superman and pushed too hard on the lever when turning it off and broke the stop tab. I used to have a two speed wiper untill i lost count and thought i had one more notch to go. Now i have a Stop, off, slow and not as slow. If i turn it too far down, the wipers stop mid wipe. Not good when raining but good when cleaning them at the gas station. Embarassed I guess now i know why the wife won't let me drive her '72.

Intermittent wipers were not available until 1979, your switch was obviously replaced. Here's the page from the '79 manual, which does show the feature:

Intermittant wipers were available in 1975 in the Rabbits, Dasher, and Scirrocos's.
It wasnt hard to convert an air cooled with the later parts.
Both of my Type 3's are going to get the intermittant wipers when I get time.
