I was interested in buying a Porsche Pully, but I have a few questions before a do:

1. How well would they work on a 40hp.

2. Where would you buy one original or repro?

3. Also do you have to buy a porsche crank or can you just bolt it on the stock crank.

Hello-

1) The upside is that they look cool, and they lower the amount of HP consumed by the fan. The downside is that your fan won't blow as much air over your engine, so it will run warmer.

I believe Porsche was able to use them because they're engine ran at speeds much closer to the limit of the fan.

2) You can find used ones on eBay, or you can buy repros NLA Parts.

3) They'll fit onto a VW crank, but only the early ones will have the oil grooves. Most will require that you install a sand seal.

It would appear there are also Porsche crank pulley's that are full width at 170mm - I have one - its a 4 hole OT - was this Okrasa VW? However, on measuring the diameter of the scroll seal it would appear to be 49.7mm - hence mine would probably leak unless I go sand seal with it. Oh well.

Now if you go for a smaller Porsche top pulley - 356's 96mm vs vw's 110mm - then you may be able to use those smaller OT Porsche crank pulleys and still turn the same speed? Maybe thats how Porsche got away with it?

I would have thought with our small width 40hp fans you'll need all the fan speed to keep a higher output / heat making engine cooled enough? On my 40hp big bore I went for an oversize bottom pulley like AC net sells with a stock 110mm top pulley.

Those are "easy" compared to a Pre-A pulley. Wink
