Hi guys. Looking for ideas and tips of what to do with my 25hp engine for my 50.

Its not the original engine so happy to mod away, but its got to be correct for the mid 50's and I'd be happier with an engineers approach rather than just bolt on goodies. Feel free tell me if any of my ideas will not work or are not period correct, I only want to do this once. I'd like a nice drivable engine about 45-50bhp similar to my old 66's 1300 single port.

Its not a massive budget so no judsons or expensive rare cranks. Machining and balancing are all ok. likewise I have a small lathe and access to mills, benders etc so ideas for hand made inlets and exhasts are welcome, as long as its what was done back in the day. I'm also happy to use repro parts if I have to, as long as they are good.

Ideas so far

Crankcase Stock 25, bored for 36hp barrels and pistons
Oil Cooler Porsche 354 oil cooler
Crank Welded and balanced 36hp
barrels and pistons Stock 36hp
compression ratio 7.5:1
carbs Dual 28pci
Cam BBT's porsche copy
cam gears Straight cut
rods ???
rocker shafts ???
flywheel 36hp 8 dowelled
oil filter Fram - what else is there
oil sump ?????????
dizzy 838 or Bosch VJ4 BR8 or VJ4 BR25
coil ????
oil pump ?????
Exhaust Home made (copied from a guy who did this here in the UK, back in the day)

heads 36hp flowed as per here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9...;start=220
heads inlet valve 36
Heads exhaust valve 33

So let me know what you'd do or change and where I've messed up!

Seb

No one any ideas?

My 50 needs a motor and I couldn't put a 1600 twin port in her............

I did here about a guy in the UK who used a french flathead V8 external oil filter, fitted to the inner rear wing rather than in the middle of the engine. Anyone heard of this before?

Its a good idea, I'm assuming recurving them is a specialist job. Anyone any idea when the 010 became avalible?

What where they using for coils back in the 50's? stock again or aftermarket?

Cheers

a 010 is the later 10 digit part code version of a VJ4 BR25 off a kombi bastard motor (porsche as well?). i think that bosch went to the 10 digit numbering system in 1964 but best to check that date as i'm not an expert.

getting a 383 recurved is something that needs to by done by someone who
A)knows what they are doing
and
B)has the correct testing machine plus the parts to change it

i'm sure you could find people from the us on this site that could do it. if you don't want to ship it and can't find a vw person over there try asking a vintage racing type (even look for adds in one of the classic car mags).

Thanks for that I'll stay clear of an 010 then as its too late.

I like the idea of a stock carb or maybe the VJ4 BR25 if I can find one.

I'm only 29 and have not delved into early tuning before. So all advise is welcome.

About 10 years ago I had a long chat with an ex serviceman who had worked under Major Ivan Hirst and brought a bug back with him. Then working for an engineering company he did various home brewed mods. I've always thought that come the day I had an early car I'd copy some of his ideas. Sadly he's passed on and the car is long gone, I only wish I could remember 1/2 the stuff he said.

I know he used two stock carbs with a homebrewed linkage and made an exhaust. He also did a pile of work on the heads and even started to make a mold to cast his own b4 he sold the car
