My crank is at the machinist and he called to suggest that I have the EMPI stroker crank for my 36 horse heat treated as he had to grind it. There is a risk of it twisting apparently, and he is not sure it needs to be done. Anyone know?

How much did he grind it ?
What stops it from distorting during heat treatment ?
I'd be looking for a different machine shop. |

I phrased it wrong. He said that distortion could occur during heat treatment. The crank is fine. He ground it one under.

i guess i dont see the point,with cranks you want to balance and magniflux to make sure you have no cracks......to my knowledge it shouldnt need heat treating and i might be very curious to make sure my machinist knows these cranks BEFORE grinding,best of luck

I don't know about you guys but finding knowledgeable machinists for 50 odd year old VW engines is getting damned hard. Most of them are dead or retired. The guy I am using does a lot of aircooled VW and Porsche work so i feel relatively comfortable. Its just that he has no experience working with an EMPI stroker crank from the '50s and hasn't seen much 36 horse stuff of late. I guess if I was willing to look outside of the area I could find someone more knowledgeable but I like to stay local as I have heard toomany horror stories about stuff going missing that has been farmed out to far away destiantions.

hopefully he knew what he was doing,alot of porsche cranks have been ruined by improper machining by vw machinists,they machine differently at the cheeks. i dont know about empi cranks though,seriously i do wish you the best of luck
