|
|
Hello,
I've got the 62-64 wiring harness from Wiring Works, on the diagram that came with it says the wiring goes to voltage regulator that mounts on top of the gen ("Correct for this model").
My car has the regulator separately from the gen:
How i "induce" the gen from the regulator?
My regulator have 5 connectors.
Thanks in advance,
Nir from Israel. _________________ 1961 Golf Blue from Israel.

Your voltage regulator is supposed to sit on top of the gen. Since yours is mounted on the fan shroud you can extend the wires to run over to there if they are too short. Or spring for the correct part. Either way you should be able to make it work. _________________ -OstKüste-

The length of the wires it's not the problem.
I can connect the wires from the harness to the generator or the voltage regulator. I also need to connect some how (idk how) the regulator to the generator (that's my ?) to regulate the charging to 12V!
So how i connect the generator to my type of voltage regulator? _________________ 1961 Golf Blue from Israel.

from harness to regulator. from generator to regulator. where the fat male on regulator to generator there is another fat male right below it--- run from this fat male to battery pos/+ terminal ---OR---- to 8MM stud that very large battery cable from battery... the other small (1/4" male terminal on same end of regulator) goes to generator. on regulater to harness they have ring terminals for harness wires. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

When VW changed to 12V generators, they moved the regulator from on top of the generator to under the rear seat. So when you put a 12V regulator on a 6V car you have to choose where you mount it. Often it ends up on the fan shroud. I did that myself on my 62 when I first converted it to 12V. But later, I went and drilled and tapped an extra hole on top of my generator and mounted the regulator there and have done that on my 62 bug ever since.
When the regulator is mounted remotely, always a good idea to include the ground wire just to ensure it's making a good ground connection.

here some up-to-date pics, and the way i thought to connect them. the red and blue coming from main harness, the other red coming from the starter (as shown on the color diagram), the greens are the wires i want to add, is it gonna works properly this way? (I need to take some car electric basic course...)

Yeah, What you have in your diagram looks about right...
As long as you have it set up like this it'll be fine.
What brand is that regulator? Looks like an el cheapo aftermarket one.
I run the new (and better) electronic Bosch regulator nowadays. On my 62 this is how it looks, compared to the old style I had before.
However on my Baja, I have it on my fan shroud. It looks like this... (BTW, that's a noise suppressing capacitor on the generator there, and it's hard to see but I do have a dedicated ground going from the screw where that capacitor mounts to the generator and one of the mounting bolts of the regulator)

Andy thank you,
I'll try your way. I'm sure it's going to work! _________________ 1961 Golf Blue from Israel.

Is the case of the new style regulators hot (+12V)? |

Yeah Phil, well not hot, but Generator output, so when the generator is charging it is indeed live. I've mentioned that before (well in other threads) that that aspect is the only thing I do not like about the new style regulators. Especially when installed under the back seat on late models, as it's pretty easy for a screwdriver or other metal items to slide down under there..... zap! On an engine I'm not as concerned but if you do something like adjust your choke or mess with the pilot jet with the engine running you need to be very careful.

How hot (as in temperature!) does that top get in use? Might it be possible to brush on that rubber stuff like you use for tool handles and such? That would help avoid the dropped tool or loose wire problems (sparks, fire, shorts) that could be dangerous. Is the cover acting as a heat sink and must be kept clear? |

Yes, I'm certain it is a heat sink. There are clearly three power transistors mounted right on it. I wouldn't do anything to hinder heat transfer with it.
