I looked in 'beetle Vin' and found my engine is a H5xxxxxx and it says M147 next to it (1500).

What does that mean? Semi auto?

I would guess that's a M-Code. I didn't see what M147 meant, but if you look on the VIN page at the previous year you see M157. The M-code 157 per the M-Code page on this site means:

"44 bhp engine with exhaust emission control system
from Engine No. H 5 000 001 up to H 5 900 000
47 bhp engine with exhaust emission control system
from Engine No. B 6 000 001 up to B 6 600 000
48 bhp engine with exhaust emission control system
from Engine No. AE, AH 0 000 001"

I would guess M147 means something very similar, but I'm no expert.

stenciled in white paint on fan shroud. this was used on assembly line to let assemblers know which engine it was. no time to be looking at stamped numbers below generator stand.

Just purchased a fan shroud from the swap meet for cooling vanes and it had m157 stamped on front and back. I couldn't find any information regrading to the markings until now. Which year and engine would M157 be associated with? Not sure if type 1, 2, or 3.

Thank you

M 157 refers to exhaust/emission control devices installed. As far as which engine it was installed on: dual port would have the offset doghouse style shround or the non dog house would indicate something after single port 1968. I don't thinkemissions devices were installed before that date.
