I know it's a hard Q to answer...but
I have a (2)40hp engines. They both have end play. one is just slight movement while the other is 1/16" clunk or so.
I want to take these two engines and build a decent one out of them.
I plan on bearings, P&L, seals, etc. But with the cases both having detectable end play, does this automatically rule out re-using the case(s)?
I know machine work will be done, but saving a case with end play....?
Will it be in my best interest just to find an engine without end play to start off?
Thanks

Take them down and inspect. Could just need a thrust cut or maybe assembled wrong before? _________________ Gerg

Seems to me all used engine cases need a thrust cut and linebore, it just depends how many times it's already been cut. I've seen engines with endplay like yours that were already cut 3 times... _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Problems common when these cases are NOT machined properly.
The alignbore has to be perfectly done. Yet people are so surprised when the bearings move and pound the hell out of the mains. If you do not have the proper bearing crush, what the hell is supposed to hold the bearings in place?
People think you just pass a bar in the case and everything is cool. WRONG!
It is all in the machining. Is there a difference in a $40 versus $100 alignbore? Better believe it.
The alignbore is the most important machine work you will ever do to refurbish the case. Get it done properly and you will not have this endplay problem. |
