I'm thinking about using some Bondo ( plastic body filler ) on my '64 steering wheel. Its got cracks all over and big chunks missing.

What is the original steering wheel made out of , the outer coating that's cracking?

And will Bondo be strong and durable enough to stick in the big gaps and last?

Anyone try this?

I use apoxy to restore my wheels. its way stronger than bondo and will hold up better. Make sure you grind out the cracks all the way to the core or they will come back in time

www.thebugshop.org has a steering wheel resto guide that will walk you through the correct way to restore your wheel. Bondo is not the correct way and will crack and give you more of a headache than you already have. If you go to the tech page, or right now, the what's new page on the bug shop there is a link to steering wheel resto info.

We've restored dozens of OEM wheels for many show cars. We've always used PC-7 Epoxy which is readily available from the Eastwood Company or Sears. Cost is approx $12
Paint is more of a touchy matter. We recommend Imron-based paints as they are very hard wearing. Since you are constantly handling the wheel, the gloss will outlast any other type of materials (laquer, urethane etc...)
Hope this helps.

I also use epoxy filler and I use epoxy paint. www.ezcamper.com/steeringwheelresto.html has a guide to restore a wheel.
