I am ripping apart the splitty in order to get it ready for spring. I am trading the safari's for a set of front window/door seals and starting on the interior. The PO or someone before sprayed some some spray glue to hold down a gross carpet. I did a search and found that some people recommended removing it with MEK,brake cleaner or even sanding. I worked on the Mcode with brake clean and it took a long time to get it looking good. I tried a fine sandpaper and it seemed as if the glue was clogging the sandpaper and it was not effective. I am searching for some other ways people have removed it. I have the time. The pics below are of the spray on glue underneath the front area where the seats go.

Try a can of 3M Adhesive Cleaner or a can of Acrysol.

You'll need to test both products on your paint first. I left a 3M-soaked towel on the hood a Jag for 10 minutes, and it dulled the clearcoat. Embarassed

Scrub it with lacquer thinner and a rag, always works for me. Be sure the area is well ventilated.

If the adhesive is still soft, X2 on the 3M adhesive cleaner, and Goo Gone works good too. If it's really hard you might have to sand it off.

Acetone.

I would pour some on and let it soak a bit, but not too long as it will evaporate. Put some more on a rag, and scrub away. Be liberal with the acetone. You can get gallon cans at Home Depot.

Let us know what works best for you.

Man I hate that stuff. On both my VWs that stuff has been as hard as a rock. The only thing that would touch it was 80 grit on a DA.

Acetone. Mucho ventilation. Get a stack of cloth rags, no paper towels. A plastic paint scraper from HomeD is also useful for scraping loosened goo. Test it out, elbow grease and acetone shouldnt violate the paint. Ain't fun though.

Same here, ripped out some old nasty ass carpet, only to find old nasty ass glue. After you get that shit cleaned up though, seeing the clean paint underneath is rewarding.

Whatever you do, DON'T use the "Adhesive Remover" from Home Depot/Lowes(right in the same area where the Laquer Thinner/Acetone/Solvents are) that says it can be used for carpet glue and mastic. It's basically paint stripper with a different label, and will bubble the paint in 5 seconds. Ask me how I know Shocked

Oh, and take care to stay away from any source of flame (wtr htr, furnace) That stuff likes to flame up!

Goo Gone seems to remove all traces of everything I've ever used it on, and doesn't seem to hurt paint, varnish, etc. I'd still test it, though. That hard glue has been there a LONG time, and I'm not sure I've ever tried it on that kind of stuff.

Plus, it smells all orangey afterwards...

I would never use Acetone on anything for any reason. It's highly toxic. If you do use it, wear an excellent respirator and never let it touch your skin.

Just a thought, but why not try a heat gun and a plastic scraper first?

Pick up some latex or nitrile gloves while you're there.

Your hands will thank you for it.
