I've been doing some cleaning and came accross my box of odds and ends and saw this.
After the oil extension thread, I thought this might be another part people might have and not know what it was for:

I'm talking about the brown coated wire not the dish drainer.
People have in the past confused the dish drainer for a griddle, it's not, don't cook pancakes on it.
I know what the brown wire is for now, but I didn't when I found it in the cabinet and almost tossed it.
It goes on the fridge shelf and its for holding larger bottles in.

Now it's time to clean the nasty fridge for camping this year.

Art,

You should have posted the stove burner key and held a contest. That one was in one of my drawers and took a bit to figure out.

DogPilot, INDEED... I have mine attached to the H2o lock key so I don' tloose either.. otherwise the little lady could toss it while cleaning out the drawer.

If I recall correctly there was a T-shirt in the classifieds with the A-Z done in VW part caricitures.. the Westy Stove key was the "T"
I wanted that shirt just for the "T" stumper.

See, I got none of this stuff.

Huge disadvantage to getting a camper that has been through various and sundry owners. No owners manual, no stove key, no water key, no wire thingee on the fridge door. No telling what I else I'm supposed to have.

That's okay, I'm making this thing mine. From the unique bike attachment system on the back to the Zetec powerplant planned soon, it will be a one-of-a-kind.

Still need a water key, though. Wink

As I said, I don't have one, but supposedly it allows you to unscrew the top center on your stove burner in oder to clean out inside the burner.

From what I remember, it's easily fabricated. Some one will post up a picture soon, I bet.

holy cow! My buddy and I were cleanig two westy stoves last weekend and had a hard time with the burners, he said there was probably something already fabricated to this job. We ended up using some pliers.

Lucky me! Mine c/w owners manuals (Westy one too IIRC) VW service record book, a water key *and* even a fridge manual! Wink But, no stove key. Never even heard of it til now!

Not sure if you're joking about the water key, and I"ll bet you know this, but if you want one made, some locksmiths (one I found had a BUNCH of Westy keys.... none fit Rolling Eyes ) might have one that will fit. Or like in my case, be able to work with the tumbler if you remove the unit from your Westy and bring it to him.

mightyart. Thanks. That part may well be hiding in my basement somewhere.

Neil.

I'll probably just go ahead and order the entire water door/lock/key assembly. I know I could just get the key, either from a vendor or from a locksmith, but my door flap is busted off as well, so I might as well go crazy and fix it completely.

I got a hunch the stove keys will be selling for a lot higher price now that its been revealed that most of us dont have one.
I saw a few brown stove knobs going for $50.00 each. Mad

I'll cop to it.

I had no idea such a thing existed.

Though I'm pretty sure I saw one in the drawere when I bought the van.. Lord knows where it is now.
Since I never throw anything out..
The question is, "Which box is it in?"
and
"Is it even in one of the boxes marked 'VW crap'?"

Awe crap, I had one of those too. I figured it was just some junk left over from the PO. I may still be around. Now I'll be obsessing about it until I find it.

I would say the brown wire is there to keep drain pan from rattling like crazy when going over bumps. I keep some closed cell foam in mine for the same effect.
