I'm doing the rebuild of the westy rack. Here is stage 1
lotsa rubber rings and 3 seals. I am going to try to source the parts locally. $90 for a kit kinda takes the smarts out of doing it your self when a rebuilt is only $150 more.
More to come............. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

Bill,
How's this project coming along? Who do you get the kit from? Kida lazy here, is there a good break down procedure in the Bentley, or do you just figure it out? Any special tools needed, or just the usuall extensive home VW set? how are the other one you rebuilt holding up?
Sorry for all the questions, but $90 is still cheaper than $250......and I've got two leaky racks. _________________ Imagine that, theres not an "h" in either Westfalia or Syncro? |

sourced the parts locally, thanks Willy at ECI, $75 and last one left. Bentley doesn't cover it, I just took apart.
You need to make a tool to take it apart. Reassembly is easy, I took photos but the focus was off. I'll write it up when I get the time. Reassembly takes about 1.5 hours. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

Here we go:
loosen the internal nuts to remove the seal housings.
Clean every thing and lay out the parts in order of removal.
If the center shaft is rusted, pitted or scored STOP, it's toast buy a new one.
this is the center point: C clip, spacer, spacer with bushing and rubber ring inserted inside, spacer then C clip.
The sleeve:
Bushing chamfer faces inside the sleeve then the seal, spring side facing you.
Sleeve to the shaft
install the plastic bushing then the rubber ring. leave the 4 point shim on when cleaning, no need to remove it.
Sleeve and shaft to the driver housing
Passenger side housing
Seal, spring side facing you, plastic bushing, metal spacer with chamfer facing you , plastic bushing.
Replace the 2 rubber rings on the outer housing, slide the outer housing onto the shaft assembly. Install the other 4 point shim, slide the pass side seal assembly onto the shaft and tighten the internal nuts
Done, attach the arms, boots and rods. plug and play.
That was fun _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

For the love of the Samba gods, please make this a sticky!
One question Bill, can you post a pic of the "tool" you have/made to remove the "internal nuts"? _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

No $150 rack exists.Unless you build it. Stop bumping. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

What Bill says is the parts are $90 but you can get a rebuilt unit for $150 MORE for a total of $240. RockAuto has a wholesale closeout for $211. |

90 Dollars for a seal kit? Do you have a part number or a source for these? Mine's leaking.
I have a manual rack I'm thinking of installing, but I have to find the intermediate shaft for a manual rack. _________________ -Jim DiGennaro, Samba lurker, Disc Jockey and LiMBO freak www.LiMBObus.org
