IMO for the money you cant beat Bang & Olufson! That being said, I have a Technics SL-DD33 that works great. Got it on ebay for around $30.00. If youre talking just under $200.00...go for the B & O.
I have an MP3 converter program that i bought ages ago that i use. You can probably find a shareware program today. That way you can convert your vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks etc. _________________ 1972 Squareback fuel injected--Daisy (sold)

Technics makes good players and the large selection of available styluses is a plus.
I've used this software for transferring vinyl to digital. It has features meant specifically for this purpose such as skip and hiss removal and bass boost. You can just adjust the settings and upload the record onto your computer or if you feel anal and want to custom remaster things you can work on specific pieces of the wave file which can be displayed graphically.

I have a Technics from the late '70's. Never had a problem with it...and it gets a lot of use! |

If you want convenience (and not the absolute best quality), get one of the new USB turntables that can hook to your PC and encode the discs into MP3s. |
Why would you by pass the sound card in your PC. Get the program not the USB truntable |

I have an ION usb turntable and really don't like it. I also have a technics 1200MK2 that I use with my sound system. I bought the ION to rip directly to my pc but wasn't happy with the feel of the tone arm or the cartridge it came with. So now I just hooked my stereo up to my pc.
As far as 78s go Audacity will allow you to rip at the slower speed and then speed up the music after it has been ripped. |
Your right. You can buy 33 and 45 RPM turntable and record a 78 at 45RPMs. Change the speed at the PC program. |

The problem isn't the speed. It's stylus size and tone arm weight. To play pre- WW2 78s properly you need a 3 mil stylus and more arm weight than modern (since about 1970) turntables will give with modern cartridge designs. Most 33 and 45 RPM tables have a 1 mil or 0,7 mil stylus. Any smaller stylus size just rides the bottom of the groove, muffling the highs and adding even more surface noise. The super- light tone arms and modern stereo cartridge designs actually INCREASE surface noise and rumble! Then, if you run it through cleanup software, you cut off the musical highs and lows as well.
In addition, running super sensitive stereo cartridges gives you TWO channels of greatly enhanced surface noise to a middle channel of real audio signal.
Most people just attribute noisy recordings that sound like they were recorded in a barrel to the "primitive" technology of the times. This is somewhat true on pre 1925 acoustical recordings- the tone range was all midrange with lots of resonance from the recording horn. But in mid 1926, the changeover to electrical recording began. Victor, Columbia, and OKeh electric records from about 1927- on have simply astounding clarity and fidelity- IF played on the proper equipment. The laminated Columbia and OKeh records, if well cared for, have almost no surface noise as well. Even some of the later "Dime Store" labels like Harmony, Velvet- Tone, Diva, etc. are amazing. A lot of the other brands- Gennett, Paramount, Challenge, Champion, Melotone- used cheaper shellac and fillers- thus more noise- but the music still comes through nicely. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Because using the right equipment that those records were engineered to play on is better. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I have a "Technics Quartz" direct drive turntable that I love. It plays and sounds amazing!! I also have a portable 33/45/78 player that usually comes with me to shows. Not a lot of information about it though. It's ALL Red, white and blue so I'm assuming 1976ish to go with the Bicentennial. It also plays and sounds amazing!! _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

So, I finally opened up my Graetz and found a bad connection for the audio out. I've been able to hear the record playing through the stylus but not through the speakers. Now I need to flex my solder skills, or lack thereof.
Bad connection in the lower center.
And here's my 8-track player. (No need for a different thread.) Recordable. Way Baller!

I have a Thorens TD-160 with a Lyn Basic tone arm & and ortofon cartridge
Personally, I would buy a Rega turntable if I was new to the game. Its a British made new turntable line. Excellent tone arms Thorens use them! and probably no muss with new equipment.
The old stuff is good too but its like the old vw's the older it is the more "minutia" you need in order to buy and maintain one |

I'm so stoked!
My Graetz is playing!
I soldered the audio connection, and got all the spinning stuff clean and lubed. The needle works good, but my collection has been on my walls for years, so I've got some scratches.

All I have is 33's, but it has 4 speeds. Can't wait for garage sale season. _________________ Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right. -Henry Ford
