I would like a rear tire carrier to bold my 15" spare but don't want to pay $600 or more. Has anyone tried adapting one from a junked Pathfinder or other car and has it worked well? I've seen burly ones on old broncos and others on jeeps and sportages that might work with some cutting and welding back together.....

Bronco's, Jeeps, they all work with little to no modding

The only ones I'm familiar with are the Broncos - two different types but the mounting brackets are very close to the vanagon contours. Need a little shaping to fit perfectly. I have two in waiting but haven't installed yet. McVanagan's link is to Eric's past project where he installed one.

thanks guys, sounds like the Bronco 2 is the way to go. I was thinking Pathfinder cause I believe it is a bit wider across the back and may be able to accomidate a big fuel can as well. Time for a little junk yarding! I will report back if I find a pathfinder carrier and how it would fit- it would be nice to stow a can back there like the RMWesty carrier (their $600 carrier!).

The Pathfinder unit fits very closely to the curve of the corner. You can modify the mounts if you'd like, I wasn't too worried as the body on my old van is already rough and you can see the small deformity anyway. I did have to fabricate a reinforcement plate inside the corner to support the bolts, and another inside the rear lid to support the latch, but this thing is bomber! I can stand on it and it doesn't give--super heavy duty. I also cut the original studs (6-lug) and welded in three for the Vanagon pattern. Then added some angle iron for a fuel can holder. Total cost? $75 + time.

Thx Karl! Any chance of getting a pic or 2 of the the mounting?

I am in the same boat. I've tried to make the VanCafe spare tire carrier work but I can't get it to stop rubbing on the steering column. I think it's time for plan B. As much as I'd like one of the Gary Lee racks or carriers, my "financial advisor" (i.e. wife) is rather reluctant at this point.

Thx!

If I were to do it over, I would have mounted the hinges about 3/4" higher--you see where the latch plate ended up going! No worries, that rear lid is dented and rustyed out anyway. Wink

That looks like it fits really well. Is there another bolt besides the two visable ones on the sides of the anchors?

I like the extra wide, the Bronco carrier is only good enought to carry a tire.

Yes, there is a bolt from behind as well, you can almost see the recess in the top hinge photo. So three bolts on each hinge. There was a fourth but that is the part that gets cut off.

Awesome Karl! I saw 2 at the pullapart (I went to pull a complete EJ22 turbo.....that got crushed the day before...DOH!).

You say you wished you had mounted it a little higher. When you get a chance would you mind measuring from, say, the bumper to the bottom mount so I can get an better idea of fitment.

Thanks.
