I had an ignition problem on my trike and replaced the switch.I thought all was good until I took it out on the road and one block later it was a smoke shield. I burnt up the wiring by mixing up a 2 wires. (I should have got out my Rat Race Prod. wiring diagram that I used to initially wire the trike.) Anyway, I'm getting ready to put it back together and I need to know what guage wire to use for the many different connections. Can anyone help? I just kinda winged it the first time and want to make sure it's gonna last. _________________ Ride it like you built it! |

I'd say, 16 to 18 gauge for the marker, brake and turn lights. 12 gauge for the headlight/KC lights. 14 or 16 gauge for the starter solenoid and coil wires.
FYI, here's a link to the 1962-1965 wiring diagram, the probably the most simple diagram that VW had in a bug with turn signals.

In the diagram, the gauge is marked on all the wires, but you'll have to convert the wire gauge from metric to AWG. Here's a general conversion table:
mm2 - AWG
0.5 - 20
0.8 - 18
1.0 - 16
2.0 - 14
3.0 - 12
5.0 - 10
8.0 - 8
