Made in the 1950s out of Phoenix Arizona. This thing REALLY BLOWS!
Put ice and water in it, and plug into a 12 volt plug (cigerette lighter) and you're freezing.
Check out the little ribbons blowing straight out!
Simply awesome:) _________________ http://ghostwagens.blogspot.com/

Busdaddy suggested I post this. Fold down 2/3 center seat. I really haven't paid that much attention to center seats but I guess this is pretty cool.

Have just acquired M501.
Basically a set of bars and back to go between the walkthrough to allow a 2/3rd bench seat in the front. It has a padded top to match the padding on a microbus. I'm thinking of stripping this off and painting it Pastel White to match the westy interior.
Damn rare I reckon! |

I have only seen this in '68's, post up some photos. A friend and I just checked out a '68 with this option, he took photos, and I think some of the M-code plate too. _________________ ---

Sorry for the crappy pics but the bus was full of stuff. Eric (long-roofs) tells me this was to allow a 2/3rds bench seat to be placed in a walk through bus. So far only seen on 68's. I don't know if there is also something down low and towards the front that would provide a spot for the front of the eat to mount. I would assume there is.
I did not get a pic of the M-code due to the immense amount of crap piled inside this bus. The owner was not around this time, but if I ever am able to catch him there, I will try to procure this part, along with a few others on this bus. Anyone ever seen a full bench bulkhead on a 68, other than double cabs? _________________ nothing |

maybe the rarest is the "hand crank" to start the motor..3yrs ago while going thru the yukon I came across a 67-68 camper that was bought in Germany and when VW had heard that the vehicle will spend most of its time in the very remote areas of that region (especially in that time) they installed the small opening and supplied the "hand crank" just in case the starter failed...in some cases it might still be needed and reminds me of a new VW/Audi A6 that broke down MIDWAY between Anchorage and Prince George...it so happened that when he asked me which was closer, I said take your pick,..either way it is 1000miles...I think he was amazed that I have driven down this road severals times with my 25plus yr. old vehicle |
dayum. was vw the last company to do official hand crankstarts? |
They were certainly the last company to have a car that could easily be adapted for a crank starter. A hole in the bumper, a couple holes in the tin, and a special pulley nut and you're in business.

I know its an old post but I had to add, Toyota Lancruisers had hand crank provisions well into the 80's and maybe even the 90's. _________________ nothing |

Pics of the rear plate and bars which are now Pastel White to match the interior. |

Yes. Not as un-common as it would seem. |

So that begs the question, why did M501 exist? And why has it only been seen on 68 models? _________________ nothing |

Late bay bumper guards are somewhat rare
Bumper guards that have the notch for the deluxe trim -very rare
Chrome bumper guards (champagne edition) rarest of the rare
Champagne buses were only in 2 years 77-78
they were the only late modal buses that came with chrome bumpers
they also came with the deluxe trim
but the chrome bumper guards were still a option that most
champagne buyers did not get |

Has anyone seen a Bay with "fixed" vent windows in the front doors? When I decoded my M-plate years ago I ran across 507 - "vent wings in cab doors." I thought it was some sort of goofy German interpretation
until I ran my numbers thru http://www.alltheprettybuses.com/_d_decoder.asp and it came up with the same thing.
After checking out my Dutch and French transporter catalogues, I think I see where these windows (air-conditioning, to you and me) were un-openable. Hmmm... _________________ '69 SingleCab

Yep. My '68 Westy came that way. Can't say for sure, but it seems like VW put out quite a few different models w/o movable front vent windows, and some other deletions, to throw out low-price specials. We even had a '77 Rabbit diesel w. fixed vent windows. A VW dealership guy called it a "Bronze Edition"(hidden meaning: a 'stripped-down' model). Very basic; very light; killer fuel mileage! _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Yes, my friend has an early '68 Westfalia with the solid wing windows.

That makes sense - my Bay was a bare-bones SingleCab from the factory. Thanks! _________________ '69 SingleCab

As far as the full bulkhead and the fixed vent window are concerned, they may be rare in the U.S. but I don't think they're rare in general. I have a 69 European camper which has both, and as far as I know they were pretty common in Europe. |

I have read elsewhere that the fixed vent wings are more common than opening wings in Europe. They have been importing the opening type from the US for years.
The full front benches aren't rare here either, I know of a couple in my area right now. The question of the front bench conversion kit seen only on 68's is still open. _________________ nothing |
