|
|
All I wanna do is take the brake drums off my 87Westy to check the shoes and clean.....but they wont come off.
I don't have the pullers to remove the hub or the tool to remove the hub nut
I've searched and found.... 'don't hit or heat the drum.'
Any advice would be great
Thanks |

You don't have to remove the hub and you don't need any special tools. First, be sure that all the wheels on the ground have a block on each side of them. Then be sure that the parking break is off. Third, back the shoes away from the drum by turning the star wheel from the back side by sticking a short screw driver through the inspection hole. A small mirror propped on the trailing arm has helped me with this many times. Whacking the edge of the drum gently with a rubber mallet has never been a problem for me. Usually the biggest issue is keeping the drum from falling on my toes as I tapped it with the mallet. _________________ '68 Autostick Bug Mom bought new

I use a 4x4 piece of pressure treat to wack the drum, spin and repeat, wack, spin repeat.
You can try to spray lube into the seam around the axel and at each stud.
I haven't needed to do that.
Becareful not to hit the backing plate, just the drum.
It will come off with some good wacks.
When you replace, coat all mating surfaces with antiseize.

If you don't know when the last time they were taken off, they could be rusted on.
the first time I took mine off, I had to use pb blaser around the bolts and had to work them for a good hour each.
Now they come off real easy. |

Isn't there also a small bolt on the face of the drum that also needs to be removed? No one has mentioned it yet. |

I kind of figured the two small bolts were a given. |
