I am looking at the options that are out there for a shifter to suit my 550 project.
Already purchased one of Jakes stageC T1 trannies, so gotta suit a t1, mid engined and a torquey 2316.
This is the commonly used one that I have come across and gets pretty good reviews:

It is also available to suit just about anything else, so pretty generic
This is another that seems newer and more commonly used on off road cars judging by the pics:

Looks to be more specialised for mid engined application and tougher, better engineered as well as being less generic.
Does anyone have any experience with either?
Or any comments regarding the claim of solving the vulnerablility of the VW nose cone?
I am a real novice when it comes to gearboxes, so hoping that a few better qualified sets of eyes will chime in with some comments......
what do you think? |

The first shifter was designed and built by Jim Cunningham at Brandwood Cars in Phoenix back in the 80's. We sold hundreds of them at Karl's Custom and they were the best shifter for a mid-engine car, bar none. The other one I am not familiar with, but it looks like a better quality unit than a lot of the others. You cannot go wrong with the first one though! _________________ OK Thang |

my buddy has has the second one, i have never diven his car but just sitting there playing with it you can def feel the gears more. you can hardly tell its a cable shifter.
i have something kinda like the first one. not that exact one but same style and it works fine once you get used to it. you can def tell its not a linkage shifter though. |

Without meaning to vampire the post, can you guys tell me what the advantages and weak points of cable shifters are? I am new to the idea. |

pros:easy to use in mid engine apps
cons: generally (not allways) not as clean of shifts as a good linkage and lots of moving parts |

I have the Branwood style cable shifter in one of my sandrails, it works great. Its been through 4 seasons of riding Glamis and not one issue or missed shift.
IMHO save the money and go with the first one. |

I have a t handle on my gear box. First gear and third gear I never use. Second gear is 78 mph and that's good for me |

I modified a T-1 Brandwod cable shifter for the 914 transaxle in my dragster and it worked flawlessly. I did convert the transaxle to a tail shifter at the same time. |
