This is a picture of a line I replaced a year ago. Well almost a year ago, 2 days short of a year. There are hair line cracks forming at the inner layer.
This is a properly rated fuel line. _________________ Steve

Second that, for the second time this morning: the Goodyear Viton-lined hose is the shit.
But steve, you might supply some info if you want any pertinent comments to your question, like for instance, what kind of hose is it? I mean, just showing a piece of hose is like saying "I got food poisoning. Don't eat burritos at that place!". Well, which place? _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Sorry 10c for the lack of information. I hesitate to give more info of the source as I purchased the kit from a cafe and tried not to give a bad name to a good supplier of Vanagon parts until I find out more. _________________ Steve

Well it's the brand, not the source, that would be important to know. I guess my taco-stand analogy kind of flopped in that regard. You could share the brand with us without bashing the source, since the same brand is doubtless available from more than one place anyway.
I understand you not wanting to point fingers at one of our trusty vendors, but QC is QC. Maybe you want to let them know what you've found, too. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Most definitely, let them know and show pictures.
Request that they get the Goodyear hose.
When they comment on the price of it, let them know you get what you pay for.

Considering what is at stake here and the many vanagons that may have this kind of hose, your results should be posted as soon as you find out. I am sure from the picture that this is the hose on my vanagon and will change the hose if need be. |

Mmm.... let's not go crazy here.
This hose show sign that it was cut (the end you showing).
So depending which tool you use to cut the line those airline crack could be normal.
It's the outside crack that show that an FI line is of poor quality.
Also, that end was highly compress (under the clamp), on top, what is the condition of the nipple where it was? A bit of rust? Rough metal.
If the airline crack are only at the very end this is perfectly normal.

Ben,
The photo of the end that shows cracks is the short piece between the white plastic coupling ( at the fire wall ) and the plastic tube to the filter. The photo of the marking is from the leftover. _________________ Steve

I wonder if it has anything to do with the ethanol used in American gas.

Just a thought...from a Canadien
I know some of the folks on the vanagon mailing list had some problems with their "new" fuel lines last year too. _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

450 have view this post, stop scaring people
Well, i don't know. Check some other end! Like the one at the fuel pressure, if they all show sign of crack, something is wrong.
But believe me, let's not blame VanCafe, or any other vendor. I have bought was was suppose to be premium FI hose and some have cracked after a year. The same part # i got a few month later was a completely different hoses. It's dificult for any mechanic, VW vendor to be sure at 100% of part quality, it's a sad truth.
Last year i cut in half a almost new BOSCH fuel pump that gave me trouble (noise and pressure problem), i didn't care if Worldpac wouldn't reimburse me... (but they did). What the heck you think i found printed inside the casing.... yeap, made in China.
Most VW vendor/mechanic are people of passion, i don't think any would sell something bad on purpose.
But you did the right thing! Check those FI hose once in a wile.
VW OEM hose where of extreme quality... all frigging VW hoses (coolant or other) where of superb quality. It's dificult to find replacement of that quality today.
To be honest, Small Car as some very good one. German made.
Like stated here, Good Year or other major big companies make good product.
All i can tell you is very good FI hose goes with the price you pay.
