Here is my new engine for my 54 oval.
It´s based on a 30hp industrial engine I took apart to check everything.
Then I out on a lightened flywheel and had crank blanced with flywheel pressure plate and the pulley mounted.
The engine specs are: Ligthned flywheel, Mr Okrasa cam, Crompression ratio raised to 8-1, all pistons and rods are weighed of to the exact same weight, express kit with 2 28 solex, fram filter and okrasa oil cooler, and a berg oil sump.
I had it on the dyno the other day and it made 43hp at 3600rpm an 90 nm at 2900rpm that is almost the same as when I was running a Judson.

Thanks for the nice words guys!
I forgot to mention I run a 010 distributor and a homemade "Abarth" exhaust.
I also have 356 style pulley, and a 356 oil filler/breather on it.
I can`t wait to get out and drive it properly instead just taking a spin around the corner and back.
A very nice thing is that has maximum tourqe is at 2900rpm this is perfect as that is the rpm´s it takes when I drive 100km/h _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

Hi Bengt and Andi
I know you both run vintage speed dual carb motors.
Do any of you have problems with the starting when the motor is hot?
I believe it´s the heat that rises up into the carbs?!
I´m considering to make a plate to insulate from the manifold to the carb, so that the heat won´t rise so easy up there.
Help and ideas wouls be apriciated. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

No I dont have any problems with that on any of my engines.
Are you sure its the heat?
In the instrukction paper it says that you should have a copperring as a seal between the head and manifold to make sure that the manifold get enough heat!! |

Peter,
Can you describe what you did to build your 'Abarth' muffler.
Any photos of your muffler?
Thanks!

It´s not a real problem.
If I give it full thottle it starts in a few seconds, I have been told that is normal when running dual carbs from some fiends running big 2276ccm motors.
Andi I will send you a email later.
Sorry I have no pictures of the exhaust, but I can take some this coming week end. _________________ http://vw-bluehats.blogspot.com/ |

adjust your mixtures peter. If your hard starting warm, and WOT starts it, your way too rich. check float level, and readjust the idle mixture screws with the engine at operating temp. Need any help, PM me. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

Hi there.
I also run an EXPRESS in my 59.
Here you have a photo from it.
I have no problems starting the engine when it is hot.
Greetings from Portugal.

I don't know if this helps; I once had a 1750 with dual 44 IDF's that I made some bakelite head/manifold gaskets for and didn't really have any hot starting problems after that. Something between the carbs and manifolds would probably help. Al _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |
