(8/25/2013: Topic title changed from "SF Bay Area p coating in gray + silk screening stove front" as it is now the official group powder-coating thread and is no longer limited to San Fran.)
-----------------------------------------------
this is what happens with these vans, you start a small project but the moment you take something apart you realize that while you're there you should do this other thing too and...
Anyways, taking the fridge out I noticed how bad the gray paint on the metal grate at the bottom of the fridge is. Paint is chipping away and the metal is starting to show some rust so I will be painting all the gray metal parts of the van like the fridge grate, the table legs and brackets, right side of frame on stove lid, etc. After some research these are recommended matches:
Krylon's Dove Gray (#1605).
Dove gray valspar #165816
Plasti-kote also has dove gray #364,its also a good match.
Ford engine gray
Has anyone tried any of these colors?
and, since I have zero experience painting except for rattle cans, what do you recommend I do to paint the metals? Powder coat?
I might paint the metal plate with the stove knobs and water/battery lights too. Does anyone know if the two decals in that plate are available anywhere? One of the decals is a black "Westfalia", the second one is a warning about not using the stove as a heater device.
Thanks!

member "scsurfer" as the westfalia decals for the panel, he has sent me a couple. far as paint, I tried 2 different colors and I am unhappy with both. But its been a few years and I could not tell you which ones I actually tried I would pull something that got a good example of the original color (maybe on the backside as the paint/coating faded badly on the westy's) and have some paint colormatched. Thats my plan, well someday camping has taken precedence over making the van prettier over the last few years
Oh yes stripping the "paint" off the westy metal is not alot of fun, but if you have any flaking or peeling you probably need to get it all off, the stuff does not sand off, I used paint stripper and it took a few times to get it all off. I did not try to sandblast as my cabinet was down when I worked on my interior parts. It should strip easier that way though _________________ Markus |

I took the fridge grate and the stove/sink panels to a Hot Rod Shop and had them sandblast and powder coat. Cost was 50 bucks (the color was "machine gray", but I cant remember the brand of power coat the guy used).
Anyone know of a source for the "battery/water level indicator" text that goes on the small, stove front plate? _________________ Now: '89 Westy

I'm updating this thread and changing title. I initially started asking for good color match for gray interior.
David and I found a place that will sandblast and powdercoat all the metal interior pieces in our gray interior westys. The color seems to be a good match, maybe not perfect (hard to say by looking at just paint chips) but good enough. We also found a place that wil silk screen the front metal plate on the stove cabinet with the WESTFALIA logo, the water/battery indicator signs and the small text on the left about proper use of the stove.
Let us know if you are in the Bay Area and want to join us doing this in the next days. David will follow up here soon.
cheers |

|
|
Looking for anyone interested in getting their stove faces refinished and having the Westfalia logo, water and battery LED graphics and WARNING:... professionally silk screened back on, ready for another 20 years.
I have found a shop in Oakland CA that will do the printing, very nice guy, family owned business. If there is enough interest in the SF Bay Area, the printing price per unit will be around $35 (Black INK).
Sand blasting, primed and Powder Coated can be had in Gray (or maybe brown too) for around $15, maybe less.
For now, SF Bay area takers only. I want to get mine done this week.
Any takers?
PM me if you want in so I can be sure to get your contact info _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

I might be in, but how big of a job is it to remove the stuff? Do I pull out all the cabinets? Thanks for doing this BTW. _________________ 4 speed 88 Westy |

You dont have to pull the cabinet,
but it was a bit tricky to get the face plate off.
Somebody had a pretty good description of the process. If I can find it I'll post a link.
P.S.
Do the metal vent under the Refer while your at it.
P.S.S.
BTW
Gowesty is selling a decal now:

I just redid all the metal in my van. I went the cheap route: dremmel, sandpaper, spray can primer and paint. Brown. Turned out just fine for less than $15. _________________ 1982 Westy, 2.0L AC CA emissions |

For the face plate, remove the teeny screws thar are located in an angle and upward just below the bottom edge of the face plate, push down on the face plate to get the edge of the face plate over and out.
For the metal vent at the bottom, follow the Bentley manual for removing the fridge but you only have to do a few of the first steps. Remove the front gray wood frame for the fridge, it's just a bunch of screws and you'll get to the vent.

To add, on my metal faceplate, I also had two screws - one on each end - that went through the cabinetry and into the metal. _________________ 1982 Westy, 2.0L AC CA emissions |

I just pulled mine off. Real easy, took 10 minuets. I took off the little face plate off first, and pushed the plastic light electronic apparatus back into the area below the stove. There were three little screws underneath the front lower lip, 2 screws on the sides and the 2 nuts that hold the stove knobs. Lift up and it popped right off. _________________ 4 speed 88 Westy |

This is how I removed my stove face panel:
NOTE:
If photos are missing, they have been captured and you can find them here......
https://oldbluesblog.com/files/WestfaliaStoveFaceplateRemoval.pdf
Detail for 1 of 3 screws
Remove plastic cap for this rear facing screw
Then remove this screw
One more with plastic cap behind driver's seat
Pull the Stove Knobs straight off (no set screws, just friction fit)
Remove the valve retaining nut
I used 17mm to make sure tools would not scratch
Remove both screws for the LED panel
Carefully pull the LED panel out and then...
Turn the LED panel so that it will fit into the stove
Push the stainless steel stove top straight UP to loosen it from the face
Mine was rusted in place and needed liquid wrench(ish) stuff to help it move
Carefully pull the bottom of the face away from the cabinet
Stove Face is pulled away so that it will slide DOWN and clear plywood
Keep an eye on the Valve Stems as the sheet metal face may catch on the threaded part of the valve stem
Carefully pull the stove face DOWN and away from the cabinet
And it's OUT
Ready for a face lift
This is my preferred method for organizing fasteners

David,
This is a very clever way of organizing fasteners, way better than my tiny plastic bag approach. Thanks for sharing this. Your other photos are all top notch, too! _________________ '86 Westy, 2.5 Subaru power

I found this on the UK site Brickwerks, but have had trouble getting in contact with them. I like the water volume and voltage readings.

It must have been an option on some of the European fridges.
Mine de-ices just by switching from 110v to 12v _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

We got a few takers for the silk screening. Powder Coating will be done on Friday, everything to the printer by Tuesday 4/21. Still time to get your stove face to us. I promise to post pictures no matter how good they turn out.
Thanks for the compliment. I have to admit that my s.o. Renee came up with this, as I asked her to be my librarian while we took EVERYTHING out of the Westfalia, except steering wheel and fuse box. Thanks again Renee. xoxo _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)
