|
|
I have a 74 super vert that need a new trans. The trans in it now has a 3 bolt front mount. THe 71 super trans that i have to replace it has the 2 bolt front mount. Will i be able to just swap the nose cones and bolt it up? Will i be able to use the same type of pressure plate and throw out bearing that is on the 74 trans on the 71 trans?
Thanks

x2 what glen said.
Had the same problem - lost reverse: but put in a 71 trans. swapped the nosecone and hockey stick and all was well.
good luck _________________ 74 1303 (RevBug): plan for German Look

THe only thing is is that the 71 trans and the 74 have different 4th gearing. If it is an original 74 trans,it is a stockl fwy. flyr.single sideplate. the 71 would have dual sideplates.Like glenn said.. just swap the noses and be careful you don't tear the gasket. or get a new one. |

The'71 should have a 4:12 ring and pinion, and the '74 should have a 3:88. You will like it on the freeway. _________________ OK Thang |

The difference on the freeway is indiscernable since 4th gear was also changed to negate the effects of the taller R&P.
The real difference is in the lower gears. With the early gearbox, the car will accelerate better in the first 3 gears. _________________

You are saying that 4th is a lower ratio than the .89 that the earlier ones came with? My 74 trans had an .89 when I tore it down. It might have been swapped. _________________ OK Thang |

I found a listing for the '74 and it is supposed to have a .88 4th. It works out to a 3.41 final drive with a 3:88 R&P. A .82 fourth with a 4:12 would give you a 3.38 final drive, so it would not be much different at freeway speeds. Obviously my transaxle had been "changed." It worked great with a 3.18 final drive at 70 +. _________________ OK Thang |

i've done the same thing as well when i rebuilt the stock tranny for my 74 super i chucked in the one out of my 71 super with a 3 bolt nose cone
the difference isnt noticable in top speed or accelaration
at 100km/h it went from 2950rpm to 3000rpm _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

oooo...a whopping 70mph!! Better get out a drag chute to slow it down!! I did say they were different. And true..you won't be winding out second and third in the city like with the 74 trans. But, will notice it the rpms on the long drive. |

The listing you found is wrong. 4th gear is a .93. If you do the math, it negates the effect of the taller R&P. If you found a .89 in your gearbox, either someone put it there after VW, or you had a relatively rare 73-74 Karmann Ghia gearbox (which came that way from VW). _________________

I guess specifications found were wrong. All I know is the 3:88 is a good ration on the freeway. Many agree, some will not. _________________ OK Thang |

This is not up to personal opinions. The gear ratios don't lie. Swapping to a stock Bug gearbox that has a factory installed 3.88 does not alter your freeway driving because the final drive ratio in 4th gear is the same as what's in the earlier 4.12 gearbox.
Those people who swear there's a difference are just imagining it. _________________
