|
|
I have recently purchased a 1966 21 window bus that needs paint. Having been into Bugs for a long time now i know how fussy people can get over paint colors. When I restored my 52 split bug I made sure to paint it the factory color of black. Painting it the color of a 70's bug would have de-valued it and freaked purists out.
Is this the same with people in the bus world. Its a 66 so its not a barndoor. But it is a 21 window. The original color was white or beige on top with titan red on the bottom (I think) I would like to paint the top the chestnut brown with red below or sand and palm green. I know that year did not come in those color combinations. Am I at risk of devaluing the bus because its not the right color for the year?
Anyone?
Thanks.

What are your intentions for the bus? If you want to resell then yes you'd probably get more for original colors. But its your bus and paint it the color that puts a smile on your face. You don't have to please anyone. If done neatly you'll still be able to sell it later on. Good luck. _________________ 67 zenith blue sunroof

I personally like buses in thier original color. Putting an early bus color on a later split would bug me. But that is just my opinion.
The Chestnut Brown and Sealing Wax Red as well as the Sand Green Palm Green color combos are held sacred in the Bus community and it might irritate a few people to put those colors on a later Split.
In the end do what you want. But dont be suprised if you get some Bus people that ask you why you did it. |

If the original paint can be saved, my opinion is that you are wrong to respray. If the original paint is toast, it's your bus and paint it how you like. Stock colors, even if inaccurate to the year of bus, are a damn sight better than some of the awful colors some volks throw up on their busses. |

I'm in the same boat you are. My bus's original color combo is the lamest of all - sea blue & blue white.
I'll probably stay with some combo of original colors, though. _________________ '65 Deluxe bus long term project |

I am in the same dilema. I have a 67 westy that was originally pearl white. Have done major metal work to the bus and have had it soda blasted.
It will be in primer within the week and still can't make up my mind. Don't want the original white but I believe it will be an original 67 westy color. Right now it is either velvet green and white or beige grey and titan red.
What to do, what to do? |

I think I'll try and stick with a 66 bus color. There's just so few and nothing that really grabs my attention. We'll see. _________________ Why pamper life's complexities

Im with vwozzie on this one. Im stripping my 66 Kombi back to its OG Lotus White, only to find out that its beat and hiding LOTS of bondo. Since it needs paint, Im thinking of Lotus on top and Velvet Green on the bottom... but, to go SWR/CB or SGPG on later model is sacreligious...just my .02! |

I'm one of the few who would tell you paint it whatever color you want. Some of the new paint colors are fantastic. It gives you the ability to deck out a matching interior.
1960 colors were lame. Auto paint pigmentation was still in its infancy, they didn't even ecoat which is standard practice now. _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

My '61 was SWR top to bottom...(panel conversion).
Painted below the beltline black.
Don't know that I would do it over...
Yeah, I like it, and it's stunning...but....
If you are gonna have remorse...err on the side of OG.
Your bus, though. But, it's a lot of dough to lay out...so, be happy. |
