here are the pics..

first i had the dash cut on the previous weld marks. nasty job. lots of rust, twisted metal and poor welding skills. i left in place the side metal to attach the split dash luggage tray, just because mine was not completed and very rusty on the left side.

dash in place looks ok. special thanks to Mircea for getting the left side panel. cutting was somewhat easy, but still took me almost a day long to do it. i still have to do small patches as the way the dash was cut previously and what i had did not match entirely. nevertheless it will look clean and nice in the end.

a previewof how the dash was prepared. left side is cut from the old dash and clipped into place. still needs lots of finishing touche but overall i am more than pleased. bye bye new dash!

rear apron removed. not a spectacular transformation but i really had to cut it off as it was rusty filled with bondo and not even correct H pattern.

the split as it sits today. what is still not pictured is that i removed the hood cable tube as i had one lying around and mine was broken in 2 near the apron.

soon to follow:

front apron removed - i have a 3 finger metal section and will convert it to a 4 finger to be correct looking.

B pillars repaired at the latch area- fortunately enough i have 2 B pillars complete to use the weld-in sections.

next things.. A pillar repairs, rear view replacement, etc, but first i have to have the front of the car ready and split doors in place.

Wow, you are a brave man, that is a MAJOR project. Kudos to you for taking that split back to what it should be. Looks great so far..

olo , yes the body will be lifted from the pan but that is the final bodywork step. i have to remove the incorrect metal sections, then with the body reinforced i can lift it off easily. i will 99% need new heater channel bottoms, but for the moment the upper area is subject to bodywork.

i am not a brave man, trust me all on this one. i wantd a split for more than 10 years.. that was my holy grail and because in a former communist country foreign cars were almost impossible to buy by the common people, i am very curious what was the first owner doing as a living...

so, more pics and some more progress..
started working on the rear clip. rear halves separated, so i can take out the rust. see the rear view comparison (maybe not 100% centered but you get the idea), it sure did sounded good at that time to have a newer clip installed.

so, small steps to victory Smile

well, this looks almost like a split. Smile

more welding, more sanding, grinding the welds etc, but you get the picture. long way to go still, doors need welding, aprons repairs/correcting, so you'll read more of things to happen in the future.

the progress looks great. I like the vw graffiti on the split section. How hard was it to get that section to weld in straight and with no warpage from heat? must have taken a lot of pateince. Good to see it being put back to a split! Very Happy

rear view is now in place.

as for the welds, the secret is to tack weld the sheet metal into place and weld from several directions at a time. hammer down imperfections and make sure all is perfect fitted before welding. rear view area is a bit tricky as there are some areas you have no access on the back side.

i will continue with the dash and hopefully in some weeks it's in. there is a bit of work to do on the doors bottoms, on B and A pillars, rear and front aprons. i have sourced a later H apron too, not in a great shape but as it will be modified to have the correct split shape.

there's still much to do on the car but i hope is finished at east at the end of the summer, just in time to catch the last meetings of the year.

another news is that i cleaned all the old paint and all the roof is now in original L90 paint. the car sat in the sun and the paint layers became somewhat like a sticker, and peeled off nicely.

i found a round spot just near the A pillar on the roof, a round one , that led me to believe my car has had a Herkules or some sort of suction cup luggage rack on it sometimes during is original paint age. there's also the dimple for the antenna mount, but a bit hammered down. i will try to get it out properly from the inside out in the mirror mount hole.
