I'm using a GE fluorescent (T8 tube) from Wal-Mart. $11.99, designed to run on 8- AA bateries.

Worked fine when I hooked it straight up to my 12v in the bus, but I fried the circuit board when I turned on my battery charger (It puts out 14.5v)

Problem solved by adding a $.79 voltage regulator from RadioShack. It's a small "chip" with three legs, soldered into the current supply lines. This holds the power to a steady 12v max. Works great ever since. (well, after I bought another light) VERY HAPPY!!! Very Happy

I can get you some pics & part numbers if needed . . .

Yes please on the offer of pics, Klauss. I was just today pondering how I would go about the lighting issue. Timely indeed.

I replaced my westy light with a 12v florescent light from
the local RV store
its low wattage & very high output in light
the down side was $50 for a 12inch florescent that runs on 9-24volt DCpower

you should try your local RV store they have a range of
lights in 12volt to fit any budget or application

phip,

Here are a few pictures where you can see the light installed over the kitchen. I'll get some better (closeup) pics, and also the part numbers for the light and the voltage regulator chip I installed . . .

Has anyone converted the existing florescent lamp in the back of a Westy to LEDs? I'd like to keep the stock lamp exterior but with LEDs inside.

got them off ebay they are 5mm pre wired led's and 5 mm chrome bezels. I ran all the wires around the roof opening behind the plastic trim and placed the led's next to the fixing screws for the roof plywood.
