Help Needed....Radius Arm Bushing Sleeve Replacement?

This part is NLA from vendors and VW. Mine are almost dust and I'm going to rebuild my front end. Has anyone had to replace this? What did you use? I think a piece of pipe the right size would work but I wondered if anyone else has come up with something the correct size.

Van Cafe said they are searching for a replacement but haven't come up with anything.

Got mine from Brickwerks in the UK.

The dimensions of the piece were discussed on club 80-90. Cant find them though but will keep looking. Easy for a machine shop to make.

I am currently working on having these and other sleeves in the Vanagon suspension produced in stainless steel.
My partner needs the exact specs of a new sleeve and he will make them.
We are waiting on new sleeves from another source to reproduce.

Our target price will be $15-$20 a sleeve at the moment.

I will keep this thread informed as too how we are making out.

If anyone has this sleeve brand new and is willing to measure it and or will ship it to me so I can measure it, I will pay shipping and give them a set of stainless sleeves once produced.

I got lucky when doing radius arm work on my '81. Got two of the last few, if not the last 2, that were available to my parts guy.

FWIW, I too thought one could use pipe. I forgot to measure my new ones while still in hand. Meant to do that.

Again FWIW, the metal they're made of is *likely* harder than mild steel. On my '81, the rubber bushings were so worn.... "how worn were they?" .... they ovaled the hole in the subframe. Point is, ovaled hole seemed to take more of a beating that the sleeve and arm.

Thanks to Mark who sent me the measurements:

56 mm long - 2 3/16”
25 mm outside diameter - 1”
19 mm inside diameter –3/4”

So I'll post the info if I can find a standard pipe or fitting that works. It's almost the size of a 3/4" Sch 80 pipe. OD=1.05" ID=0.742"

It doesn't look like the price for stainless pipe is that bad.

I too noticed how close it was the Schedule 80 steel pipe. I found a place online that sells stainless pipe cut to length and was thinking about ordering some already cut to size. The cost is a bit high for a speculative effort so if someone has a scrap of Sch 80 steel pipe we can test fit that would be great.

edit: I ordered 4 pieces cut to 2.20", if/when it comes I will try the fit. The cutting they offer is not precise, only as a minimum length with it allowed to be 1/8" over that. I anticipate having to use the bench grinder to finish it off.

FWIW, some more information on sourcing these: I just received a set from gw.

Disappointed in quality, they are pretty sloppy pieces of work. Nice beefy stainless but they also were cut imprecisely, unquare ends all 4 ends, slightly different lengths. Mulling my options: reuse old, return these, or dress the ends and use these anyway.

Have others who have purchased these from said vendor been satisfied?

Run out to your local trade collage and give them a quick drawing with dim. and an idea of the material.

That part would take less than ten munites to make on a manual lathe. That is the perfect project for the students.

With a cnc it should be less than 2 min to make. If you get up by Leapold/Stevens there is a costco west of there. across the parking lot there is a shop that should be able to help you out.

Have not installed them yet, but they are nice quality and made from heavy stainless tubing. Great seller and price.
