An important part of the whole fuel economy and performance equation is of course vehicle weight.
Out of interest and perhaps comparison with others i weighed my van recently (gravel pit scale), without me in it:
1680 KG
3690 LBS
1986 9 seat Vanagon GL with sunroof, stock engine, stock 14" wheels and tires. Middle set of seats removed. Lots of bits and pieces, about 70lbs of work tools, fluff, chocolate bar wrappers etc. _________________ Thanks,

i weighed my syncro GL 7 passenger at a DMV scale with...
- no people inside
- aftermarket fabric sunroof
- all seats installed
- toolbox
- zetec motor
- 16" MB steelies with kumho 225s
- homemade 2x6 steel rear bumper
- no spare wheel
- roadmaster "stowmaster" towbar mounted (probably 50lbs)
- 1 toddlers car seat
and she came in at 4000lbs on the nose |

A Volkswagen Vanagon is just a material thing,
As such, it is of the earth,
And if i need to, I can let my Van go. |

That chart seems about right. I went through the scales at the dump last year. With just me and some empty trash cans the Syncro weighed 3995 pounds. Without me, probably 3820-ish. _________________ '87 Syncro passenger w/ 2.2L Subaru

I stopped at the dump scales just to see how much it weighed and it was at 5900 but I'm sure its more with the wife and kid and stuff still gets 26mpg sometimes a little more. |

That is pretty heavy for an "empty" (?) van.
On a big road trip we were way loaded to 5700 IIRC but still got ~33 MPG, I do have a TDI, but you do too, right? _________________

hard to make heads or tails of that table -- one could assume that those wts (esp. the ones with no ID) are individual wt. measurements, reported by others and measured somehow or other... |

I took mine to the scale Friday - Its an 87 Syncro that I converted to a westfakia. With my 300 lb westfakia trailer it hit the scales at 4620 lbs. That was everyday driving empty weight. I am sure when the van and trailer are packed for camping it will add up fast...maybe another 1000 lbs ? (5 people and gear)
The person at the scales was shocked last year when I scraped the rusted out westy donor at its stripped weight !

As with the Vanagon, its not the chassis, its the baggage. _________________ Current fleet: Vanagons, two '88 GLs and an 89 Bluestar. Beetles, '63, '64, '72 convertible. Plus, four Subarus and three Prius. Too many cars. |

'Bout 4800 with the wife and I on board in "weekend trim"...'bout 5200 in "deep camp trim". Add another 100 on the nose for the 147Ah 3rd battery that's goin' in soon as PDX posts about how to do so... _________________ 87 Westy Camper

Well there sure is a big difference between the lower and higher weights people are running their vans at. With my stock 2.1, and 3690lbs i find the performance to be adequate, though i deliberately drive like an old granny just to keep the fuel costs down. I can only imagine what an extra 1000lb or more does to fuel consumption and performance.
Thanks for contributing to my thread everyone, and thanks for the links _________________ Thanks,

Doesn't the sticker on the B pillar on the driver's side have the Vans weight posted?
I swear I just saw 5000 some lbs on that sticker on a 87 GL _________________ T.K. |

85 Westy with 1.8T conversion, Yakima box, big wheels and tiresm and a bunch of other "extras." I hit 5400 lbs. coming back from an outing fully loaded, full tank, most water, myself, wife and three kids, etc. I think if I were to clear out the people, tools, camping equipment, etc. we would easily drop the weight down to about 4600 lbs. or so. _________________ '85 Westy |

1991 rwd Multivan (I guess it's a Vanagon Carat over there) with 2.1 engine weighed 3560 lbs when I weighed it.
It had 15 liters of fuel and wasn't emptied when it was on scales, so glove box and the storage under the rear seat were full. |
