I found out that you have toi go to the DMV, AAA can't inspect your new 'old' plate.
But I went to AAA and had all the right stuff, my new plate is not in the system so I can do it with this black commercial plate. Need registration and maybe insurance. It only costs $45.
And you can downloiad the form from the web as a PDF and fill it in yourself.
It is a pain, but you have to take off your current plates and take them in with you 'new' plates, so I have no plates until Monday!
Someone will tell me I am sure that the black plate I have got is not the corect letter for a 63 reg truck, what is it? Only the afficianados will know!

Why not? I never fuzz out my plate numbers, it's silly. It's not like the average schmoe can do anything with a plate number, the DMV won't give your info out. |

Ah yes, that would be prudent for sure. But if you want to be frightened, type your name in MSN's white pages app. |

If someone is going to come over and take what I have, I would at least want them to work for it. I'm not much of a fan of posting my address online and making it easier than it already is. _________________ 64 Type II

I am about to do the same thing for my "65"per dmv, 66 model year camper. let me know if they need a sticker for the same year this seems silly but it is what some have said.I think it is an error in interpretation of the updated law originally pertaining to the earlier plates with the metal year badge. Any scouting reports as to which dmv is the coolest to deal with? Once they are confused about sthing they typically dig in their heels and then you are SOL. Yes, you need the sticker, just as it was needed for the yellow-based plates after '56. |

dave,
you must have a secret admirer at the dmv, I know of several people myself included who are being made to wait until our new registration is sent out before we can put the new stickers on and run the plates. $35 fee sems like you got a discount as well. good on ya mate |

Yeah, I paid $35 for my last set of YOM plates too.
Then 9 weeks later Sacramento sent me an Incomplete Application
form and a bill for $10 in order to complete my registration that took
another 5 weeks after that to go through...

You mention your "plate" a couple of times. Everything I've read says you need two black plates for the YOM deal, but no sticker for the years covered by this new law. |

I do have two black plates, and I have two reflective white plates because I got a ticket for no front plate! Cost me $35. When you go to a show, 90% of vehicles have no front plate, just lovely Palo Alto CA meter maids.
BTW I do not really try to hide, anyone can drop by and schmooze anytime. _________________ 63 singlecab

This answers my question I was going to ask, "Has anyone done it yet?". |

went on 7-1, with a copy of the new law in hand, my set of black plates with the 1966 sticker affixed and my YOM application, paid my 45 dollars and was told it would be around 30 days or so to receive my new registration and new sticker and metal tab. AAA will not do YOM registrations anymore. also not sure how someone could walk in and out with new YOM registration as well but anything is possible. Just glad I will finally be able to put these back on a deserving vintage car. |

One guy paid $35 one guy paid $45. One guy said "no sticker" one guy said "sticker and metal tab". I want to get mine to replace my og stolen one but I thought I'd wait till all the rush died down. Sound's like any time is as good as the next. |

Barry ,
You will need the following:
$45
2 identical original black plates
a sticker corresponding with the year of vehicle you are trying to register.
a YOM application.
you will receive a metal tab and a new year sticker + new registration back from DMV with your new plate # in about 30 days time.
hope this helps, there is no rush on these things, most dmv employees are pretty helpful. |

I don't know about the rules in your state, but a few years ago here in Colorado I took down the plate of a car driving through our neighborhood every night slowly with its stereo blaring. I went to the DMV, gave them the $2 service fee and the plate number and they gave me the kid's address and phone number. The next time he came through at 1AM I called his parents immediately, woke them up, and let them know what was happening. It never happened again... _________________ -- Jeff--happyhippo
