I posted this in the Split Bus Forum but only one answer so far so I thought I'd bring it to you Type 3s, figuring you had experience with all air-cooleds.

Can I use my type 3 block in a type 2?
I need to build a stock motor for my '66 Sundial (12volt). I have a single port type 3. It's already upright. What disadvantages do they have that I might find out too late that I don't know about now. Money is no object. (just kidding) Thanks for any help you can give me, Type 3 Forum.

The engine you are picturing is not a Type 3 engine. It is a 68-69 1500cc engine, by the engine number.
It does have and alternator generator stand on it, with an 009 distributor.
It should fit in your 66, if the flywheel is 6V 109 teeth. If you transmission is the larger bellhousing, you can use an automatic starter with it, since you are already 12V.
Be sure you replace any missing tin, and engine compartment seals, or you will have overheating problems.

Is that why it doesn't say "Zundfolge"?

Thanks for your reply, Russ. A well-respected VW shop told me the H5 number configuration was a type 3. This will be easier than I thought now.

Actually, that engine comes up as being built about Sept, Oct. 1968 for a 1968 bug.

Well, when it comes to the basic [engine] block, it doesn't really matter, correct? The only differences I can think of are:

  • TIII has no oil pressure port on left side of case
  • TIII has mounts for engine hanger around oil pump (IRS models)
  • TIII has dipstick tube mount at rear bottom right of sump

What are the other visual cues I'm missing?

Someone actually makes an adapter T-1 dip stick that bolts on where the T-3 dipstick goes.
